I don't think Acura really knows because some, like us have had as many as four transmissions within two years which tells me they don't!
If anyone does have something from Acura that states what the issues are caused from please pass it along.

I talked with the dealership and stated our concern for our 02 TL yesterday. The next phase according to them is a meeting with an Regional Acura representative. Not sure how this will go but I've started a list of possibilities.
I do know the car was traded in by the original owner, not a buyback or lemon case but the history of service was correct. On Monday it will be in the shop for the fourth transmission.
Acura has done things like increase the warranty and replace faulty tranny but there is nothing they can do or say that will our concerns about our vehicle go away. What good is a warranty when the tranny locks and you are involved in a wreck?
The honest truth is I love the car and had this model not been plagued with this issue it is by far the best all around vehicle I've owned. I certainly hope those without issues continue and all new models don't develope any problems.
Anyway I'll be taking it in tomorrow morning for the forth tranny.

Copland007, thanks for the link above!

Got a call from the Customer Service people yesterday. No real info was provided but they are offering a complete warranty for the extended 7yr/70000mile period.

The replacement tranny is the exact same part number as the last one two months ago. And it is leaking fluid. Will this ever get better?

Ok, the factory tranny in my 2002 TL-S (40K miles) is starting to have problems shifting and staying in gear. Kinda what happens when you don't have enough tranny fluid...but, I checked the fluid level and it's full. I've got an appointment with the Acura dealer this coming Wed. Is this the dreaded tranny problem rearing it's ugly head?

Also, are they replacing the trannies with an improved one or same as factory tranny. You guys on 3-4 trannies is scaring me. Should I sell this thing and get something different? This car was supposed to be my reliable car for the wife to drive the kids around in. I sold my 1998 Explorer for this car b/c my Exploder had tons of problems and had all the rollover problems.

Here I thought Acura was supposed to be about quality.

Hokie D,

I'd say you've got a bad tranny if what your saying is correct. Your dealer should replace it without any hesitation. It has been my experience that they replace them with remanufactured trannies, not new or different trannies.

From what I've read they believe the problems have been found but I'm not convinced and definitely not risking the safety my my family. Our TL is now with its fourth tranny. So if they have found the problem why the multiple trannies?

This entire ordeal has been nothing but frustrating. The Manufacturer wil not get involved in my case for rewinding the deal. Their District rep declined to meet with us. So my only recourse is to work with the dealer which I plan to this week.

This is my first Honda product, but hasn't Honda always had problems with trannies? I seem to recall another car (early Accord?) having problems with trannies. Also, what did Acura do for the new TL? Did they redesign the auto tranny for that car or is it the same slushbox from before?

Thumbs up Warranty Extension

Hey! I just got a warranty extension for the automatic transmission in my 99TL in the mail today. It takes it to 7 years 100K. It says it is for the automatic transmission on all 1999 3.2TL's.

Did the dealership try to explain the reason there are so many tranny failures is that people are dogging them? That's what they tried to tell me.

Tell your dealership they're full of ****. When my tranny went on my 02 Type S in June of 01 at 8000 miles, I was the first on this board and in the country (according to Acura) to have such a problem. About 99% of my mileage was highway. The tranny went again at 26000 miles about 5 months later. Still all highway miles -- which I would guess if you're cruising at about 2k rpm is pretty easy on the tranny. I finally got rid of the car with about 46000 miles on it as the tranny seemed to be going again.

I used to drive about 45000 miles a year and not one other car I owned ever had a tranny problem. My driving style was no different in any other car I owned and not one problem. Then to have 2 failures and a 3rd coming in less than 50000 miles! Oh, yeah! It must have been me. Same with the thousands of others having problems.

This problem has been going on for years now and if Acura hasn't figured it out by now, they never will. I haven't been on this board in almost a year and just came in to see what Acura had done about the tranny problem. I'm amazed they still have done nothing. You should all do what I did -- sell your Acura and move on to a different brand. Because of all the headache Acura caused me, I doubt I will ever own another of their products. It's too bad because I like their cars.

1533 I must say my dealership, Inskip Acura of Warwick, RI, has been great so far. They also found bad lower ball joints and wheel bearings. Hopefully they can get a new trans soon, and I got a kick-ass TSX Loaner!

No problem diagnosing it even though the problem took a while of driving before it happened...they replicated it right away

I am unable to sign this petition at this time.....not to say I wont in the future. I have a 2000 TL, and while it has been back to the dealer a couple fo times, their service has been outstanding. I had the 'immfamous' rotor and seat squeak problems. I even had a samll rip in the back rest portion of the drivers seat. The dealership addressed both problems over and above my expectations. They actually replaced the entire seat assembly and installed a brand new leather seat cover......even the seat panels which had no rips! So far, the service has been great. Rest assured though, if Acura ever fails to meet or exceed my expectations I'll be right back here to sign this.
