Shocks vs. Struts
#3
Correct, they control the "jounce & rebound" of the spring, preventing the car from bouncing uncontrollably when it hits a bump and keeping the tires on the road.
Struts have the spring mounted on them so the top of the spring and strut are attached to the car body and the bottom of the spring is attached to the lower part of the strut which is attached to the wheel's suspension. The lower part of the spring is attached to the suspension via the lower strut body.
Shocks are connected in the same way as struts but the spring is mounted to the chassis, supporting the car's weight, separately.

Struts are a shock absorber that hold up part of the suspension, shocks merely regulate up and down movement. Many cars came with coil over shocks - old Caprices, full size pickups, 93-02 Camaros/Firebirds. Some with coil over struts - new boxster & 911, WRX.
