Shifting: How to?

A few questions about shifting.
1. When using the sport shift mode/tiptronic do you come off of the gas before shifting up/down and then get back on it? I was under the impression that you utilized this like a stick... so let off the gas, hit the clutch, shift, let go of the clutch, smash the gas.... but since no clutch, you just let of the gas, shift, get back on the gas.... Any ideas as I never use the mode and yesterday noticed a buddy of mine just shift up and down while still on the gas....

2. I usually drive in D5 (the car is used for commuting, no real thrills in my life, I know). The night before I was speeding/racing, a fellow TL, and noted that he was pulling away from me quite quickly; while on the gas, I merely shifted into D4 and gunned it. I caught up to him and actually held with him for sometime. Can one shift from D5 to D4 while the car is moving? I was told later that one should have the car stopped to move from D5 to D4 or to change gears, but I don't believe him.

Let me know if I am damaging my transmission by doing this and also what I should be doing....

You can shift up and down while still on the gas. Since our cars don't blip the throttle on downshifts, if your foot is off the gas while downshifting and your revs are somewhat high, the car will jerk because you are putting stress on the transmission. I've found that if you are on the gas a little bit and you downshift, the revs match up better and it doesn't jerk nearly as much as it would with no gas.

There is no need to let off the gas. The SS is just telling the transmission not to shift until you tell it to. (Last I checked, I don't let off the gas between shifts in D5 )

Down shifting from D5 to D4 shouldn't hurt anything either. Now if you happen to have one of our bad tranny's, it could be a bad thing. On a good tranny though, it should be fine.

Thank you, gentleman. My tranny is one of the bad trannies. It is destined to fail, but as of right now it is 60k and running, with a few tempermental issues. I think I am warrantied until 109k or something, so no worries there.

its 7 years plus 9 months from first date of service or 109k miles- so keep an eye out- its whichever comes first!!! 1-800-382-2238 x5 can tell you that date

the prob is in the 2nd and 3rd gear clutches which are not in play with a d5 d4 situation, using SS does not hurt anything- its safe to use because engine controls limit revs up and wont allow downshift at overspeed
see the manual- click year then model for owner book
https://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/...01_OMANUAL.asp
SAFER to go over into SS than use the gate/ regular shifter because it can go into N at revs- BAD thing
in SS just tap the lever with your gas at any amount- an electronic signal process the request and then takes action
D5 is overdrive gear d4 is a just little better- you can go 90 in 3rd so thats a passing gear if you want it right now!!

Okay, some good information here...
I need to start driving more, I am coming up on 5 years... shiiiit....

some questions:
1. Can you go from driving in D5 into SS mode while the vehicle is moving? The dude at the dealership said that if you are going to drive in SS then start is SS... or come to a complete stop and make the change to SS from D5. I never understood why as if the vehicle is aware of what gear you are in, then it will convert in like to the SS mode....
2. I was switching from D5 to D4 when I was well above 90mph... so I did not feel going into D3 would be wise.... but good to know the 3rd gear is capable of that... I just want to know if there is anyway to get any high end...

You can go back and forth between auto and SS, it doesn't matter because the car will stay in the current gear. You don't have to start in one mode or the other. As far as downshifting goes, the computer will not downshift if it detects that it's not safe for the engine to do so. If you try to downshift into a gear that's too low, the LED display for the gears will flash and not downshift.

Yes you can go from D5 to SS whilst driving and in 3rd gear you can go up to 99 MPH and downshift from 4th to 3rd at 104. But not recommended unless you want a new trans...
