Shifter Tricks :P
Hey guys, I'm a newbie here, just bought an 00 TL-P about a month ago! I've already installed an axle back exhaust and CAI, but the SS shifter has me whacked out! In all the other cars I've driven with SS shifting it has been foreward to downshift and back to upshift, just like a sequential tranny. I was wondering if anyone has disassembled the console shifter and if the SS shifter uses switches that I can switch around to get it to shift the other way. Although you can just tell me I'm crazy lol. Thanks guys!

yes...i totally agree...there has to b some way...i havent driven any other cars like that...but forward to downshift n back to upshift is the true way to shift for a sequential shifter used by race cars...play my games like that too...scary thing is that i also got my friend playing like that n he was test driving my car n upshifted like it was in a game n i was like NNNNNOOOOOO...easy easy...the other way...the other way...he gave me a heartattack...thank god it wasnt at high revs...*whew*

Well, considering the fact that the automatic transmissions in nearly all cars have L or 1st gear towards the driver with 2, 3rd and 4th etc going away..
It makes sense to me...
You would be forced to think backwards. This isn't a race car, so Acura has to appeal to a broader audience.

Good point Ken, I just think it is hard for me to go against the laws of physics to shift and detract from my very enjoyable "pushed back in the seat time". it would make sense to me to be shifting foreward when you are decelerating, and vice versa. Maybe I should stick to driving my race car fast

I have a good one. I let my friend drive my car and he was shifting the automatic. When he came to a curve he jambed on the clutch to downshift.......except autos don't have clutches. It was the brake and he almost put me through the windshield!

I have driven other car's that have the SS and they are the same way, Down for down and up for Up. You have to remember the old saying, "Keep it simple Stupid". If you are creating a shifting mec for cars with an automatic tran, then you have to expect people who have never driven a stick to try out the SS... they have to make it easy to learn.

I went to my home town a few months back and rented got a g35 sedan for a rental and the shifter works the other way (up=downshift/down=upshift) and well cuz I'm used to driving the TL i found myself doing alot of the unintentional down shifting....especally merging onto the freeway.....of course having driven that for a week or so I got used to it so when I get back home I start doing the opposite....it did feel more natural to do it the way it was in the G35.(just my preference)

its a preference really. i thought someone took their shit apart and tried this before no? i forget. anyways up or down it doesnt matter as stated by z3ro since 2->3 or 4->5 in a manual etc etc.
oh well im rambling

I have before grabbed the shifter wtih the peddle almost to the floor, pushed it forward to upshift only be reminded that the car was in D5 and NOT SS mode.

The connection for the upshift and downshift are electircal connections and actually happen to snap together in a connection below the shifter.....
It would be really easy to switch the wires causing the upshift to be down and the down to be up.. it would be a simple mod.

the following wiring for the 10 pin plug at the shifter (00-02):
Upshift - Pin #6
white w/ blue stripe (shifter plug side, male) to yellow (PCM plug side,
female)
Downshift - Pin #7
blue w/ yellow stripe (shifter plug side, male) to orange (PCM plug side,

and regarding the topic... man i totally know how you feel because when I drove my sister's BMW the sequential shifter is forward-downshift/downward-upshift. Drove me nuts for the first 30 mins or so until I kind of got the hang of it. but nevertheless, when i got back in the TL i felt soooo at home again.

I would suggest disconnecting the Battery, of making sure the clip is not plugged in while you are working with it... I have a funny feeling if the computer only detects one wire being connected (during the middle of MOD). If the car is turned on at that point it will do a system check and come back with an error or a short-out...
I feel fully confident YOU know what you are doing... but I KNOW most others don't, and with a chance of "tripping" the ECU or blowing a fuse during the MOD.
It should be a matter of swapping the wires, and then telling the dealership or other drivers of your car.. lol

ok guys i did it. it was extremly easy. first you pull the center console out (the radio part stays) pull off the drivers side center console piece (you will have to remove the piece under the steering wheel). then on the back of the shifter you will see a big conector, unplug the male side from the female side (the female side goes to the shifter) after unplugged pop the clip that holds it the male side to the bracket (brown clip in pic 1). (you will see what i mean) and snake the wiring harness (male plug) through and under the heat vent duct so that the wire harness is out in the open to work on. after you get it out in the open cut the orange and yellow wires (pic 2) cut them (i used bullet connectors, (PIC 3) but any crimp conector should work) and just switch the yellow and orange wires (yellow to orange, and orange to yellow) (you will see i added wire thats not necessary i did that because while trying to strip the wire before i pulled it out to be easier to work on the strippers cut the wire like 3 times and made it to short. thats why i said to pull it out on the drivers side. you will have ALOT of room to work that way. after you reverse them just reinstall the same way you took out.
as for the + and - i took a utility knife and cut the indicators and just used a dab of super glue to hold them in place
i tried it out and it works great! Its going to take time getting used to it but i like it much better already!

Maybe someone as knowledgeable as Kris in the third gen forum can take apart their console and do it. Highly unlikely though!!!
