Seating issues

Hi. Our car has a couple minor problems and one major problem with the seating. First, the seats end up feeling like rocks quickly; Not good for road trips (granted, this car is also tiny IMO, which makes it also not good for road trips). I know replacing the seats with anything aftermarket is out of the question, due to the supplemental restraint (air bag) system, but is there a way to make them softer? It would also be nice if I could swap out the pleather for some velour upholstery, except that those are horrible for allergies, and cost, so I definitely will not be doing that (that is one of the only things I miss about our 1998 Chevy Lumina, though. And also the column shift--definitely not going to happen. Doubt if it's even possible). Also, I've heard that when newer, the seats were actually comfortable. In that case, is this because the car's over 20 years old by now?

Second, the seat heaters are both dead. I know it's something physical, related to the resistive heaters, and not a thermostat or anything, as neither high nor low work. I have read that it costs $700 a pop to fix, with most of it being labor. Should I just leave it, or is it actually worth trying to DIY?

Third, and this is the major one, the forward and aft motor in the driver's seat is on its way out (granted, we use it a lot, as whenever we switch drivers, the seat needs moved). How much would it cost for a replacement?

Fixing the seat heaters is free if you do it yourself. You can find a video on YouTube that details the process pretty well. It takes roughly 2 hours for a novice and is relatively straightforward. You could also take that opportunity to swap out the motor, or the entire seat. I'm sure you can find a used seat locally from a pull-a-part type place.

Thanks for the information! I'd rather not replace the entire thing, as then I'd need to replace the passenger seat and rear bench, since they're also worn out.
