What are seat belt pretensioners and how do they work, and do we have them 99-01 TL?

All seatbelts have pretensioners..You know when you unbuckle the seatbelt and it slacks back by itself? It goes into the B-Pillar as if nobody is using it? that's the pretensioner.

The 02 TL says it has seat belt pretensioners were the 99-01 does not list having them.

Pull on your seatbelt as if you are going to put it on...then let go...does it wind back? it winds back from the tension of you pulling the seatbelt out.

I may be wrong. I read somewhere that the pretensioners on the 02 TL are different in that they will "give" or release a bit in an event of a severe impact to reduce the chances of chest injury due to the force from the seatbelt holding you back.

 

That might be what CVCC is talking about...the 99 TL's seatbelt when protecting a passenger during a panic stop, just locks so you don't move forward into the steering wheel, the '00 and '01 may give a little more slack to prevent excessive chest trauma from the belt slamming into the chest..

Pretensioners are small explosive device similar to a shotgun shell that takes out all slack in the belt before the air bag goes off. The 99-01 did not have these;only the 02s.

 

In the '99 when you slam on the brakes, the seatbelt locks, not letting you move forward..

actually, pretensioners is a device where it pulls the occupent back, into the seat, during a collision. This device is helpful because seatbelt tends to stretch. 99-00 TL don't have pretentioners, but we do have a device where the seatbelt locks druing sudden stop.
