Screen install above factory Head Unit

Has anyone looked into installing a flip out screen right above the factory head unit for a 2003 TL non-nav? I want a new system but I dont want to lose the functions that I have if I completely remove the head unit.

might as well just replace the headunit. if your gonna get a flip out its gonna 10x better than the stocker. theres a kit that allows you to use steering wheel controls with an aftermarket screen.

Besides the steering wheel controls, you also lose seats and mirrors adjusting when you unlock your doors. I think there was something else you lose ...

really ... I heard if you unlock with your remote, that it will not adjust you seats/mirrors to thier preset memory .... instead, you'll need use the preset buttons on the drivers door. So, you say steering wheel controls is all you'll lose...

well, that is what was keeping me from getting an ///Alpine all this time (and also no dash kits at the time besides the Metra).

That POS bose is coming out soon ... as far as dash kits ... its been awhile since I've looked around, is anything new available that looks close to the stock trim?

Clean!!!!! That's what I want to do. Mold the top piece to the trim kit. Ever consider going all the way and mold the bottom piece as well?

the whole bottom peice would make it almost not functional. i don't think you would be able to take it out., since one comes out at one angle and the other a different angle. my next plan is to either move the headunit down to the bottom slot and make that where the unit pops out so the screen doesn't block the climate stuff. or make the slot a place for 4 or 5 switches. im not sure yet. have to have unit in hand.

good luck getting it done.

Yeah, I don't have any aftermarket deck but I don't see how the memory link would tie into the HU. The only other thing you may lose is the stock sub.

Yes, if you unlock your remote you are disabling the memory link feature but you can re-enable it at will. The directions for doing so should be on the back of your remote unless they have rubbed off.

Jpadilla, what ur looking for has been done before. i have seen installs where they have put a 1/2 din unit into the area where the stock cd holder is. i have also seen a full din unit be put into that gap. its gonna be hard searching for that picture but i would try if you really want to do it. also contact streeteffectz cus he is the one who did the full unit in the cd holder area. it was real slick

Yeah, I agree...I just don't feel like doing any audio changes on this car yet. Maybe I'll change my mind.

I have a new Pioneer Navi system with DVD, all functrions remain including steerring wheel control. the only reason you would lose anything would be someone cutting a wire that didnt need to be cut or just being lazy and not finishing a job.

The screen plugs into the blitzsafe adapter and plays throught the aux port. You hit the "CD" button twice to activate the aux port. External DVD player is needed to watch movies (obviously). You should re-post in the audio forum and ask streeteffectz. He has done this on many a TL before.

Thanks guys.--- It's a full din sized deck, i just cut it in half from the sides and re-wired the circut board. It's not easy and very time consuming.

i remember monitoring the thread when he was working on this one excellent work though.

and streeteffectz did do a full flipout mod onto the factory head unit -- removed the coin tray and used that curved out area right under HVAC. cant find the thread tho, d'oh.
