Hokie D,
Just installed Centric brand blank rotors and had it slotted.
Likewise, installed Bendix brand semi metallic pads.
Both are still on "under observation" test status so I just intend to
report to all after a year of use.

my brakes's history:

ok i dont have precise numbers, but i know my brakes have been replaced 2 or 3 times BEFORE i decided to get X-Drilled (KVR), they warped after about 3 months, so i got new rotors, and they warped after about 2-3 months and now i just gotta brake and hold a glass of milk and what i got?: a milkshake!!!! :p

Acura brakes SUCK. Period.

99 TL, resurfaced front and rear at 15k. Within 5k - warped. Resurfaced front at 39 - warped again within 4k. Dealer replaced front rotors at 53k on "good-will". Had Midas do rear brakes at 56K. AT 70K, Midas did front brakes. Within 2k, problem is back. Got back from dealer today. They claim it's the pads Midas is using that is causing the warping. Sure, that explains the first 50k miles.....
Bottom line - worst experience I've ever had with brakes on any car I've ever owned (at least 25 vehicles that I can remember).

Just bought a 2002 TL with Navi about 2 weeks ago...@25k miles I noticed rotor problem. Took it in and they resurfaced all four. Also replaced braked pads with "New" Acura pads that produce less heat and use "new" type of compound. I am going back to the dealer to discuss this in case it happens in the future.

I have 50K miles on my warranty and DO NOT want to deal with this issue too often, but from what it looks like, I will have to.

The dealer is great, so I hope things work out.

Does anyone know if the extended warranty will cover the rotor problem after 50k miles?

IanBiz3,
Just as I originally posted a month ago, I installed Centric rotors
(European import per the retailer)and had it slotted.
It is too early to say & pass judgement on them as I just installed
them a few months ago.
May I persuade you to purchase the rotors this site offers
and thus come out with a truthful evaluation after 5000 to 15000 miles.
Then just post the results as transparent as anyone could to further
guide the general subscribers as to which rotor is best for our TL.

I was taking my car in at a little over 12k for a seat belt replacement and I mentioned that I was having problems where the rotors were rusted out and that my braking was shaky as a result. With no questions asked, the service manager said he had a pretty good idea what was wrong and that he would have to keep the car overnight. At 10 AM the next morning he called up to let me know my car was ready and that they had resurfaced the rotors and put on new brake pads all for free. Clearly, Acura knows that there is a problem, but from my dealing with this matter they seemed very responsive and helpful.

I don't notice any vibration or shaking, but the brakes make an annoying squealing kind of sound. It's not loud, just annoying. Is this the famous rotor problem? I have 35K miles and replaced the pads with genuine Acura pads (thinking they were the best, of course).

Im new to the board and have decided to make this my first post. I also have had my rotors resurfaced at around 12K and now its 22500 and its in the shop again and they say.."it brakes very smooth for us" and nothing is going to happen. I am going to get em warmed up and pick up that ****head and go for a spin for some real time shimmy!! I also informed him he will continue to see my car until the problem is remedied. This dealer is John Eagle if anyone is interested.

My won two cents:

I had my front brakes (discs and pads) replaced at 30,000km (about 20,000 miles) under warranty and I'm starting to get the shimmies again at 42,000 km (and my transmission just gave up last night!).

I must admit that I never had any problems with my brakes, but I can definitely blame hard driving for both conditions. I think that the parts are very sensitive to heat, and the design do not dissipate it well.

So you know here were the conditions for both cases of "shimmies"...

Brakes were OK (no vibes braking from 80 mph down) in both cases prior to incidents...

case 1) emergency braking at 220 kph down to 130 kph while racing bikes (one of the guys cut me off... talked to him later and he told me he did not think someone was following him!). As soon as we took off again, shimmies each time I braked, har dor not, but feeling it most at speeds over 40 mph. when I went to the dealer, they tried to resurface the disks, but they were getting sparks where theoverheating had created hotspots. So here you go: one major panic braking and the disks are gone!

case 2) I decided to do some street drag on my own in a deserted industrial zone, but laden with stops at every corners (I wanted to test the grip of my new tires...). After just a few stops from 50 mph (but fairly agressive - no ABS, but heat generating!), I started feeling brake fade, and I now have the shimmies again.

Finally, I can only speak for myself and the few friends I let drive my car: most of us drive it hard - how can't you?? This high revving engine is most fun driven hard!! And when you drive hard, you brake hard (or late)... and create heat. The only complaint for me is that Acura should have expected it.

My feeling is that Acura did a sloppy job on the Type-S: they kept the same transmission as the regular TL, hoping that it could cope with the extra hp and torque of the stronger engine and they used the same brakes as the TL... Reminds me of Chrysler's time when the used to put HO engines in silly cars (FWD chargers, Omni GLH etc.) without upgrading brakes and trannies... It's actually a shame!!!

One last thought: I had worse with my '98 Volvo V70: it was eating up pads and disks every 18,000km (or 12,000miles). Volvo was facing the problem, as I never had to pay for brakes in the 3 year period I owned the car.

Yeah Pohanka Acura!

Had my 2000 TL in for warped rotors today for the second time. Once at 18K and now at 47K. They resurfaced again and this time gave me new pads!
They made me wait for a loaner car for 1.5 hrs so they gave me a free oil change.
Dont know if other members here agree but Pohanka in Chantilly, VA has always treated me very well.

What is the problem with rotors I was told it was the pads actually, anyone know?

I agree, Pohanka has been very good to me as well. This is my second car from them and the 5th in my family, and we have had great treatment from them. I am hoping and expecting the same for the life of my car.

I have a 2003 TL-S that I got this March and have 10,150 miles. This morning I went in for an oil change and told them that I have a vibration when I stop.

They replaced the front brake pads and cut the front rotors. Need to do the rear rotors next week, don't have the part in today for the rears.

I do not drive my car hard and always are easy on my brakes, so now I'm on this list too. Other than that, no problems.

2000 TL Had rotors resurfaced at 35k, twice. The dealer said it wasn't covered under warantee and charged me $180. I went back a few days later bacause the rotors were still bad. They said they now needed to be replaced and it would cost about $400. I *****ed and complained and they charged me only for the rotors, not labor.

Slap the TSB in front of their faces. Dealers will try to shy away from any costly work they have to do, and charge you stuff thay you shouldn't even pay for.

Picked up my TL-S in July 03.

5000 kms later and the brakes give a "hum" during gradual application. A friend stated rotors may be warped. Dealer said, I was not driving it enough and that I need to brake "harder" ???!!

Then after a second test drive, a mechanic confirms "glazing on the rear rotors, the service rep wants to charge me $90.00 or wait until the next service interval. This is supposed to be an entry level luxury car. I bought an Acura not a Honda.

Well ... brought in my 2002 TLS to the dealer to get the rotors fixed. I explained to the service rep. that breaking on the freeway causes the steering wheel to shake violently. He just wrote down on his work order --- resurface front rotors and install new pads... no question asked.

i have had this problem with a car i had before. I had the dodge avenger 4cyl 5 speed. i was a member of a club for avengers and sebrings and most of them were saying their rotors warped early too. so i said screw this and bought the powerstop crossdrilled rotors. i bought them around 30000 miles and never had a problem after that. i wished they would have fit my wife's car cause when my car got totaled i ripped everything off of the car before ins. came and picked it up. but the rotors only fit the avengers or eclipse(almost same car). so as soon as my rotors get warped then i am getting cross drilled rotors cause they don't warp and you do not resurface them.

If you are not familiar with warping rotors, it is just like a vinyl record warping due to the sun's heat(if some of you remember records). the friction actually heats the steel hot enough to make them warp. since they warp when you hit the pedal the steering wheel shakes.

now far as i know resurfacing is not fixing warped rotors. resurfacing is shaving off the top layer of your rotors so the grooves are gone and it is perfectly flat. that's why they tell you to turn the rotors when you get new pads. your new pads are then being pressed up against a good flat surface.

my suggestion is get the crossdrilled rotors if you can. it is well worth it. why they just don't put these on all cars made i will never know. i guess so we can boost up the economy by buying new rotors, turning them, and new pads, etc.............go figure.

hope that helps. feel free to correct me if i am wrong on anything.

Rotors replaced twice by the dealer on the TL-S with less than 25K miles on the car.

I installed Brembo rotors from the tire rack along with Acura pads at 30K. 25k miles later, I have not had one bit of trouble with this combo.

Rear rotors resurfaced at 4,800 kms. Dealer was charging $90.00 fee for "premature brake work" which was waived after several call to the Asst. Sales Manager.
