Ripped the Oil Pan Out of my 02 TLS, Airbags Deployed

like the title says, about two weeks ago now i hit a newly installed sewer drain manhole and the street had been dug down about 3 inches. the impact ripped my oil pan off the vehicle and caused my airbags to blow.

luckily i was fine and the insurance came through, although they totalled the car. after careful consideration i ended up with a 2008 G35x.

the only thing i can't really answer is, does anyone know why the airbags would go off? there was no bumper impact, unless the force caused the engine to move and set it off that way.

sadly this means i will be moving over to the G35 forums for the majority of my time, but it was a nice ride here while it lasted!

Best of luck to you guys.

~Bob

the triggering of the airbags doesnt really have anything to do with strictly bumper contact.. its impact triggered..

theres a video of a friend of mine at the track where his drivers airbag deployed because the launch was so jarring..

fair enough. i thought the accelerometers were in the bumper. makes sense there would be others. i'm surprised it hasn't happened to me earlier.

and man oh man does that powder burn if you get it on your skin when it deploys.

if you looked in the owners manual... a car going into a deep pothole can set off the airbags too.. lol

-----o___

the o being the front tire and the dashes being the road.. that would set off the airbags

yeah my car wasn't even that low. i suspect that as the car bounced when i drove into the area the car went low enough to contact the manhole/sewer drain grate. of course at 25mph it only takes a split second of impact.

and i'll definitely post pics of both the tl (aftermath) and the G for you guys

Sorry to hear what you went through. At least you'll have no more tranny problems now haha. Gonna part out your mods or it went to the insurance?

spoka - after my deductable i got $5500 for it, which i expected with the dings and mileage, etc.

'03TL-S - yeah i swear i think my tranny was starting to go out again and i did NOT feel like paying 3 grand for a new one this time. ridiculous. thankfully acura covered it the last time it went, even though i was a hair over 110k miles.

and the car went right to the insurance yard. i would have liked to have gotten my mods off but it just didn't pan out.

StonedCL - i did have headers on it but ended up cracking them last may when i hit a dip in the road. it so happens i have those in my basement. megan racing, they fit pretty well but have cracks in them now (as mentioned) in the manifold flange area. i had recently bought some stuff that supposedly will seal up the cracks and dry steel hard (not jb-weld) but never got around to doing it. i had also looked at getting them re-welded and just wrapping them. i dunno if anyone would want to buy them but i suppose i could put them up in the market. i also have those sweet type-S embroidered mats my ex-gf had gotten me....

i'm actually not sure if the car went to albany or long island. maybe i'll try and find out. it had outlaw engineering spacers, UR pulley, tokico blues w/H&Rs and a Comptech intake. i took the stereo and all that stuff out. maybe i'll throw that on the market too.....

even with all the mods i had on the TL, and how heavy the G is, the G is sooooo much faster. just sick.

^^ i installed the P2R TB spacer when I did the egr cleaning - unfortunately i couldn't determine how much affect the spacers had compared to a clean egr, intake manifold, etc.

But u did notice a big difference after cleaning EGR port and installing spacers? How many miles on your car when u did this?

the spacers do help a little bit- your butt dyno may sense it- 2-3 hp at the wheels is not much- the torque band moves slightly lower-left

The most noticable thing is when its super hot out and your engine runs like its 59 degrees at sea level- full power regardless of temp

yeah, I noticed a big difference in throttle response and acceleration, but I don't know which had the most affect - the spacer or clean-job. i was at 125 - 130K I believe and the egr was clogged like a mo-fo.

What did you guys use to clean the EGR port , did you just use like a coat hanger to scrub it all out or did u use some trottle body cleaner spray like sea foam?
I seafoamed my car like 6 months ago but am gonna scrub the egr port out next week..
Thanks for the help guys?

SatinSilver, whats up with those headers?
How far r u from giants stadium?

^^I used about 8 cans of tb cleaner spray (including a can of deep creep), a water hose, and several small brushes and a coat hanger. it's time for me to do this again, but like everything else, it gets added to "the list."

I'm sorry to hear about losing your TL, however I had a good laugh when reading your title. Glad you are ok though.
