Question Restoration of the Shift Plate

So I'm basically tired of looking at my scratched up shift plate and wanted to make it look a little more cleaner and newer.

I've heard that its possible to sand it down, and do some other stuff to it to make it look like new again.

Could somebody please point me in the right direction on how to sand it, what to use, etc..., I basically need step by step instructions.

Just sand it down a little to rough it up and paint it whatever color you want it

if its a 99 model you can make it look chrome by sandind down the silver paint a little. 99-03 you cant do that.

As for repainting it, just rough it up with some sandpaper, primer, and paint.

goodluck

I would do this to restore the shift plate but it depends on the scratches ( deepness ):

1) Wet sand using 1000 grit ( Get it smooth )
2) Wet sand using 1500 grit ( Get it smoother )
3) Prime
4) Wet sand using 1500 grit
5) Prime
6) Wet sand using 2000 grit
7) Prime
8) Paint

Of course they are shorter ways, but that would be my way. I wouldnt recommend using anything under 1000 grit

Example of shorter way: Wet Sand with 1000, then 1500, then 2000, prime, wet sand 2000, paint

Take it easy

the first gen guys use paint thinner/laqure and they get the chrome finish without sanding.

nice steps fl, but this is simply a shift gate and not something greatly noticeable.

godzilla, just use any sandpaper greater than...say 300-400, then use like a 800. then primer and paint.

i have built up some skills on bodywork working on my friends car. i usually prep the car a lot before painting, but this is a very small task, and you cant mess it up.

Actually just use paint stripper and spray it on. Let it sit and it starts dissolving the paint then you just wipe away the old paint and rinse it off with some water.
But, all this doesn't matter b/c the OP has a 2002
