Question Rerouting AC

Ok there is the one AC vent that blows into the back seat from the center console right? If you take the console out you'll see two black had plastic tube like things that the AC obviously is coming through. My question is, has anyone thought about cutting vent in the side of the center console and make like a vent on either side of the console for the driver and passenger? Those front vents just dont cool me off enough in this summer heat we have and I was thinking that it would be very nice to have a vent right there blowing on my side. Any ideas?

yes just tap a PVC or other plastic tube into the tube that are already in there and cut out a place to put a vent on either side of the center console.

it actually isn;t that bad of an idea, i know what you mean about the heat during the days. I deliver during the day and it usually stays over 100 degrees when i'm working. this would help, but not something that i think i would do.

Yeah, those vents would work out pretty nicely I think. They are the same as the ones in the Mazdas

yea ones that would tilt up eh.... good idea. I am going to take my center console out and get a look at the under side of it to see what I am getting myself into before I make any promises.

The way you have to slide off the center console, i don't see how you would get it to work unless you used a good bit of some really flexible pipe.

Yea, I know the vents don't go all the way back, that drawing looks pretty close. I was saying the tubing from the end of the a/c vent to the new part where it will come out needs to be flexible by the way you have to slide the whole center console back on there.

And I think the location you have for the new vent is too far back and would end up being in the back anyway. I was thinking more close to the cupholders so it will come out right by you.

hrmm... I don't know... I can't really think right now because I didn't go to sleep last night so abstract thought it not happening as of now. I will check into it and if I get the balls up to do it I will make a DIY about it.

You shouldn't have to use flexible tubing if you do all your measurements correctly, when you slide the center console back on, the pipe should line up with where your vent is. Just put some weatherstripping (or something along those lines) so you get a pretty good seal when you slide it back on. I think this is something that is very feasible, the only part that I would be nervous about would be cutting a hole in the center console.

Edit: Another quick thought...try to make the pipe bigger at the end that connects to the existing AC piping and smaller at the end near the vent. That should make the air blow harder when it comes out of the vent.

The thing is, when you slide the center console back on and line up the vent with the piping, how are you going to put on the weather stripping with the console back on and now way to reach under it??

That seems like having to get too much exact measurements down pat. Maybe someone else can do it first instead of me. I hate being the crash test dummy all the time

well you could just do a small hole and than slowly cut it bigger, you could have the vents em overlap the center console so that you don't have to worry about cutting, and as for cutting the pipe inside the console, its fairly easy, the pipe is right inside almost touching the inside borders of the console, so a small piece of tube to seal and your done it doesn't have to be pretty just functional

also to route the ac where you want it, you could use a small piece of plastic, to divert the air so that the majority of it goes into the side vent, and as for being a crash test dummy, you came up with the idea so of course you should be the one to do it....

you wont have to do any thing. The vent is molded into the rear half of the arm rest and could tap into that. You wont have to try to get any thing flexible or to line up. Just attach it to any were in there. Or if you dont want it that far back, attach it to the actual duct work under the front half of the console. It would be very easy to do, but keep in mind you may want a way to shut it off for winter so that you dont bake

I see what you're saying now.

And isn't it on the floor setting of the A/C? When you switch it to floor it goes in the back, but then if you switched it off in the winter, then you couldn't warm your freezing toes without burning your arm at the same time.

Can't you switch it on and off from the rear? Isn't that how it works already? In my 99 you can have it on or off, it doesn't blow constantly unless you want it to. Is it different in newer years?

^^ Read the post right above you, when you put it on the floor setting it goes to the back as well.

Ok I just went to my car to check. If the rear switch is off, it doesn't matter if the setting is on floor or not, no air blows from the rear.

I believe that would stop the air from coming out into the back seats, but adding the new vent would probably be before that so it would still come out of the new one. It would blow harder on you though if you keep the rear vent closed.

I gotcha now. I thought he was trying to eliminate the rear air and reroute it to the center console. Thank you for showing me the light!

Just driving today I was thinking how the a/c doesn't blow hard enough. I switched the mode to all top vent and it helped. Then I thought it would be nice to run the a/c into the seats so your back does not get so hot. That would probably take some major operating on the seat foam to be effective.

7 series bmws have that, ac comes through the holes in the leather, that would really be nice here in miami, but since i have remote start, and i usually just leave the ac on full blast, everytime i get into the car my temp gauge is always over 100....god if only miami were colder....

So who is going to attempt the mod and write a DIY about it?
