replica 6G Accord 4DR foglights DIY
You can get 'em on eBay. Run a search. Mine ran for about $70.
I am NOT responsible for any damages to your car or injuries to yourself (not that I want it to happen). This DIY is meant as a guide for those who have the time and patience to take on this rather long project for their 99-01 Acura TL. Through many trials and errors and guesswork along the way, it took me 3 days and very roughly 15 hours to finish this entire thing.
This guide is targeted for the replicas off eBay and NOT the OEM foglights.
It will also be fewer on words and more on photos. Figure it out, it is very self-explanatory.
Instructions / explanations will come BEFORE the picture for consistency.
Questions please post on this thread so that other members can see them too.
Here is a list of items & tools you'll need / I used (approximated prices):
black sandable primer $5
automotive/bonding glue $5
flat black spray paint $5
Bondo body filler $7
Dremel $65
Fogs $71
H11 yellow bulbs $17
painter's tape, mask, gloves, goggles $14
total: ~$170
And here we go...
take off the front bumper.
inside of the corner pocket
mark the oval shape with something sharp and start cutting away with the dremel
sand the rough edges after cutting
a bit optional, but you could also sand with finer-grit sandpaper for a smoothhh edge
(very carefully) align the foglight so it's horizontally flat and centered as you like it. drill 2 screws from the outside down to the fog to secure it into the pocket
here's the backside. as you can see the 2 screws from the front have gone through the plastic pieces on the side
glue away... make sure you let the adhesive bond/dry completely before handling the bumper!
now for wiring / harness work.
the wiring that came with the ebay kit are WAY TOO SHORT. you'll need to extend it by a good ~2 feet.
the wire i used might be a bit on the thin side, but i figured there's no point in using lower gauge-number wire
if the ones that already used are thin to begin with.
the grey wire is the extension i added... and the red is the original. twist the wires together and wrap tightly with electric tape.
this part requires a long screwdriver (or similar tool) to push the pre-cut circular section of the firewall from inside the cabin out into the engine bay.
this view is a bit confusing but if you stick your head into where your feet usually are and look UP and RIGHT (around where the top of the accelerator is),
you'll find that circular cutout. once you've that stick your harness thru it (duh).
for the wiring of the harness in the engine bay/bumper area, just use common sense & logical reasoning. don't forget to ground.
find creative ways to position your switches/relay/grounding/etc inside your panels/interior.
i had to connect the fog power in with my gauge's so they can both be activated once the parking lights/low beams are on.
pick up a .25" female disconnect from Radio Shack or equiv. and crimp that red wire into it.
plug into the right socket as shown below... the white wire w/ the brown plug is also part of the fog harness, and it should be plugged in as shown also.
you don't have to get new bulbs since it comes with them already, but i chose to since i want yellows.
these are pretty good for the price. www.autolumination.com H11 bulbs, i think about $16 shipped.
doesn't hurt to test them out first...! so far so good.
got to cut the metal frame support that sticks out right beneath the black bumper support-bar. dremel highly recommended for this job.
and do wear your mask & goggles & gloves & long sleeve while doing this!!!
and TAKE YOUR TIME when cutting... the metal is pretty thick towards the inside.
put the bumper back on (but not screws & tabs yet, you'll see why) and... BAM! enjoy your hard work so far.
but it's not totally finished just yet... look...
painter's tape each side (and obviously the fog), we are going to do some nice BONDO work.
read the Directions on the Bondo body filler please... and do it right. again, wear your mask because this stuff can make your dizzy smelling it for just a few mins... gloves too because... come on pretty obvious
nice and even around the oval shape. should also wait for the 1st application to harden and apply a 2nd, or perhaps a 3rd to get it packed and even.
no more gaps!!
sand it down to get a smooth surface. dremel, hand sanding, both are good.
you'll hit the plastic piece along the edges and towards the insides... all good because you'll spray everything black anyway.
BLOW the dust away before each time you primer!
add primer (~3-4 thin coats), and use finer grit to sand a bit more.
like this:
and once again, BLOW the dust away before each time you primer/paint!
then primer 1-2 layers again and start painting! i used a flat black, but that decision is up to you.
remove painter's tape...
yes i realize my bondo-job isn't perfect... but it's not bad for the first time!
right side
left side
daytime shots!
oh hotness~!!

Quick question: how did you screw the fogs onto the black plastic pieces? I mean, did you glue them first before screwing them down? Basically i want to know how you screwed them without them falling out of place lol

Wow, alot of work but it looks great! I was worried about the gaps until I scrolled further down...LOL. Great DIY, one of the best I have ever seen!!
Just curious, when you pull up to a wall, is your fog line exactly straight? I'm wondering with the retrofit if your lights are at the right angles and have vertical as well as horizontal adjustment. I know the the 02-03 models can only adjust vertically..
Fogs are one of the main reasons I waited for my 03 TLs...

As in what? The cars are the same other than the front bumper/lights and those have already been modded

looks really good!! I hope mine comes out that good.. yea the bondo job isnt that great but u wont notice it unless you inspect closely
SIDE NOTE: that bondo wont adhere to the plastic good will it? im thinking if it gets hit with a rock it will crack, chip and fall off pretty easy? maybe? you shoulda probably tried using the bumper repair kit, which would give a much better bond.

amazingly, i barely had to do any aligning. i triple-checked to make sure the fogs were screwed on straight/flat and then added the glue. the cool thing is, even if the level of the fogs differentiate a bit level-wise, you could adjust it via a flathead screw on the backside

[QUOTE=subtledreamer]screws + automotive glue/goo + bondo should be strong enough. i am a bit worried about the paint chipping but i'll just see when the time comes. perhaps then i could bust out teh bondo again and make it even smoother!!
QUOTE]
no no i believe the fogs are in there just fine... i meant the bondo would chip
