Replacing the mufflers with.......

-I was talking to my friend today, he is currently upgrading his VW Gulf(early model around '94) anyway, I told him that I removed my resonators and I wouldnt be getting a new exaust system, he said why don't you just replace the mufflers with 2 straight pipes and put tips on them. Now he isn't sure if it will work and neither am I, so I'm wondering if any of you guys know about replacing the mufflers with straight pipes.
