Angry Replacing Engine Mounts

Hey all,

My 2001 TL was making a stange noise on breaking... kind of like a "clunk" sound when you come to a stop. So I took the car into the dealership and they tell me that I have a busted engine Mount.

The guy said that it was going to cost $1700 (canadian$) to replace, but he is going to ask his manager to reduce the labour cost. Do you know what a reasonable cost for this procedure would be? The said replacing them is very complicated and it will take 13 hours of labour.

Please let me know your experiences.

Thanks!

Rob

First off you need to find out which one is bad.

2nd thats a BIG rip off. i could swap a engine and tranny in half that time in my garage

Ya, i got mine replaced under warranty. I don't see why engine mounts should go bad when my car only had less than 70k on it.....go figure.

Well, Burrard Acura here in Vancouver fleeced me for $1400 for this seemingly simple procedure. They billed me for 11 hours of diagnostic time to find the problem. I would think that since they are "acrua specialists" they would not need this much time to find the problem.

Is there any place that I can complain about this? I feel that they have completely taken advantage of me.

I warn everyone to beware of this place. I question their billing practices.

HOLY FOCK! you definitely got hosed! 11 hrs of diagnostic time? That's BS! I take my TL to Richmond Acura, and I got no problems with their service. If you ever need me to go in with you to Richmond Acura, let me know. I know the service manager at richmond acura, and help you get good service.

13hours of labout for an engine mount...WTF...did they want some fries with that too?

IMHO - stay away from Burrard Acura.
I've had great service from North Shore Acura and continue to go there. knock on wood!

With each posting I read, I get more angry about the situation. Its not the money, because it is gone... Its the principle of the situation. A mechanic shop taking advantage of someone who doesn't know cars.

I have registered a formal complaint with Honda Canada. Interesting to see if anything happens.

Does anyone know who owns Burrard Acura? Is it the same person who owns North Shore Acura and Richmond Acrua? I am looking for a new car in the new year, and I do like Acura... not Burrard Acura though.

Cheers,

Rob

Honestly..they are trying to make money..and i think engine mount canbe replace at any local shop..you don't need to go dealer for it .. it's not timing belt..eveni got my timing belt changed with water pump and tuneup ..OEM parts and labour.. flush transmission fluid.. flush coolant..all for that ..i paid 950 CAD $ ..and my car is amazing now. no problem at all..it's justmatter of finding rigth person and place

i had the front engine mount on my '99 acura t/l replaced about a month ago. i have 59k. the mech found this while i was having an alignment following an rr camber kit install. there was a significant 'clunk' sound during acceleration. the front mount cost $95 incl tax from the dealer. what makes it expensive is its liquid-filled--in essence, an isolator. install cost $35. asked the mech the cause for failure-he replied, the way you drive. the mech illustrated the punishment mount/isolator takes from normal vs sudden or hard accelerations. yes, i'm guilty of hard driving.

Nope, the owner of Richmond Acura is not the same as Burrard Acura. So you can go ahead and buy from either Richmond Acura or North Shore Acura.

Why did you get it fixed there? You said they gave you a quote you should have just said no after a few people on this board thought that price was too high. Anyway, 11 hours to diagnose an engine mount is ridiculous. I would contact the better business buereu on these fockers.

You mean only the $100? That's the deductible with my extended warranty - as to the $450+ = parts roughly $158 and $53 for the mounts - rest is for labor.

I change the engine mount my self before on my 99TL. The front was easy took me about 30min. The real engine mount was a bitch need to take alot of things out and you need to jack you engine out about 2 to 3 inch to replace the real engine mount, took me a little more then 5 hours. Good Luck.

The real engine mount? As opposed to what the Fake ones???? Yea the hardest one is the rear due to location and space

Side mount?

I had my local repair shop just tell me that I need motor mounts. This is my wifes car and when they show me the engine move, they're right.

My question is which one is faulty. They think that it's the front and the passenger side mount. The side one doesn't look like it can fail.... I haven't had a chance to get to my service manual yet but can the side ones fail?

Plus when I look at the parts places on the net it only looks like they sell the front and rear.

Thanks!

Rob

If you push your engine with your hand and your engine is moving around then is your side mount (for sure). I'll replace that mount asap, cause this will break the other mount.
It is very hard to diagnost that the front or real mount is bad when the side mount is bad. I'll change the side mount first, before I change the front or real mount.

Side Mount replacement

I'm getting ready to replace both the front and side mounts. I looked in the service manual (phone book size one) to find the step by step replacement and couldn't.

The front looks simple enough but how much "stuff" do you need to move/take off to get the side one replaced?

Thanks!

It seems these things only run around 500....it's amazing how some dealers can jack the price up threefold....

Side mounts is the easies one. There's nothing much to remove there. I remember I remove the cruse control motor and move the P/S fluid reservoir from the bracket not removing it totally.

You will need a car jack with wheel to jack you engine up a little give you some free play and easier to move the engine around a little to help reposition the engine during reinstallation of the new mount. I remember took me less then 30min to change the side mount.

Ditto

Cush Acura in SD told me that my front is fully broken and my rear is cracked...$580 to fix both mounts. Worth it to put up $600 to get it done at the dealer or should I risk doing it at a thirdparty mechanic?

I had problems there too, only for the 96K tuneup. They tried to hose me for all sorts of work that was not recommended in the manual. Regarding the engine mount. I live in Vancouver but bought my car in the US. Tranny went and Acura Canada would not honour the extended warranty so had to take it to Bellvue Wash. While there Acura Bellvue said the front mount was shot. Charged me $150.00 US. I do not trust Burrard!!

PDRich - You were right on the money! Side was completely torn and now replaced - 30 minutes maybe 45 looking for socket extensions...

So how much should the engine move?

With the side changed, brake on and rev'ed up the front of the engine moves up about an inch? Problem is that I don't know if this is "normal". I've got a replacement front but don't want to install it if it's not needed.

Mine also moves up about an inch. I think that is normal movement, but would likt to know for sure as well.

Is our side mount supposed to "leak" something out of it?? Would a bad side mount make the car shake from side to side?

Would you guys suggest to replace my side mount first or the front one?
