Removing transmission - how high to raise the front?

The trans in my 1999 TL at 108K is starting to slip 3-4th gears and in antcipation of the final event, looking at the possibility of replacing it myself with a rebuild from on-line or a local dealer. After revieiwng the manual, the only hitch I see for my garage is getting the trans out from underneath the car on jack stands.

Will I be able to scoot it out on a floor jack with the front of the car on jack stands?

I have a 3 ton floor jack with a low pick up height of 6" from the floor, add the tranny on top adding ? inches of height, whats going to happen? Or, after spending all the time unbolting it, having it on the floor jack looking at me with no where to go?

P.S. Thanks to all who commented on how to get a replacement for the auto dimming mirror (its in the mail), fixing the climate control air mix malfunctions (defrost in white out!), and diagnosing windshield wiper overswipe caused by defective connectors on the wiper rods (grand annoyance for driving in Seattle area).

Dont forget though if you at 108k the and not too much over your length of time of warranty becuase of the class action lawsuit the dealer might give you one for free so make sure to check that out too.

my tranny was a bitch to get out, put the thing as high as you possible can, you might even want to think about put the stands on some wood for more height.

Thanks much.

I will call the dealer. However, the slip right now is intermittent and might not fail on a test drive. Certainly worth the call.

It's better to take it in. Maybe you wont have to pay a dime. Good Luck!

The mileage is under 109,000 but since its a 99 I think its over the 7yr limit.

Most transmission shops can rebuild a 4-speed Honda automatic for < $2500.

How much do you really think you're going to save, if any at all, by doing the r/r yourself?

If you're going to replace your transmission and you're under warranty, don't you dare waste your time taking it out yourself if some other dude can take it out for you for free. Even if you swap it out with another '99 tranny, it will fail anyway.

Now.. .if you get it rebuilt, still be skeptical... If you do the 6MT conversion, then it'll be worth it taking out the tranny yourself.

My shop won't do bench jobs like that. In fact, we had a fleet client who tried to remove an '02 civic transmission on their own and ended up busting a hole in the case. We ended up having to fix his "handywork."

Try asking some of your local shops how much they can do that for. If it's minimal damage (which it sounds like it is) it will certainly be less than $2500 total.

Just don't keep driving it like that - you run the risk of damaging it more.

Thanks to all. It took me a couple of days to run down some of the suggestions.

About doing it myself, you know, I was looking for the new challenge, as some of you can relate to. But to only save $200 on a transmission removal, I don't need it that bad.

About the warranty. I'm over it, time wise. The car was purchased 2/99. But I called two dealers. Both had the same approach, come on in and pay $99 at one $51.50 at the other for a test drive and then they woud call Honda to see what they would do. But that is at the cheapest a $51.50 crap shoot as the problem is intermittent and try my best on the way home tonight, I could not get it to slip. So right now, I would be better off betting on the Bears with it. I will cnacel the appts.

Going to a local trans shop can work. Though the 3 shops I called couldn't commit on the cost, as they couldn't over the phone with the variables. But I did get worst case out of two of em, $1800-$2500+ to rebuild.

For me to do it, Acura Carland could ship one out for around $1500 plus freight. The Carland guy needed my VIN and exactly what was wrong with the old trans in order to get an exact price. Other on-line priced out at about $1900, probably not including shipping.

So i'm driving it, and not going to worry about it until it gets consistently bad.
