Removing tint

Removing tint
The previous owner of my TL-S put on some dark tint which I'm getting tired of.
Has anybody here had a bad experience un-tinting their cars? Did you do it yourself or take it to a shop? How much $? My main concern is not jacking up the defroster wiring in the rear window...

Yea its like 25/30 dollars a window to remove. You can do it yourself with a razorblade or a fingernail even. Be careful with the razorblade though dont scratch your windows. Just pick at a corner untill it starts to slightly peel off and then keep peeling it. Make sure you clean your windows after though lol

I had tint taken off my old car. Peel all of the tint off, get ammonia base cleaner (the strong stuff or Goo Gone) and spray the residual glue with the cleaner and let it soak in. For the rear with the defroster take very fine steel wool (I think #000) and scrub away. It is time consuming and sometimes you have to bend in some weird positions to get to some areas but it can be done. For the side windows I took a razor blade and scraped the residual adheasive off. Then clean the windows with your solvent you choose.
Good luck, let us know how you do.
Another option is to break the rear window and have it covered under comprehensive. (Not that I condone that)

Honestly if you have never had experience in removing tint then leave it to a profesional...otherwise you will prbably end up making things worse and end spending more than it would of if you took it to someone in the 1st place...

Yeah, good tint shops can remove tint with steam...if you have the cash, have someone else do it. I removed tint on my doors before on another car and it peels in two layers...first the tint, then the glue film. I removed the first layer and then got a spray bottle and put a few drops of blue Dawn dishwashing soap and mixed with hot water. I sprayed the windows and let it soak for 15 minutes..I then resprayed and let it soak another 30 minutes. The glue dissolved and wiped clean with no problem. I had 0000 steel wool to get any remaning residue off (grade 0000 won't scratch) The rear window is a pain in the ass. Let them steam that off

Ive taken tint off windows before, use a hairdryer, and a razor blade, I wouldnt bother trying to take the rear window tint off, you can easily mess up the defroster grid on the rear window, why are you trying to take the tint off in the first place? IMO i would just take it to a tint place, then you wont have to mess around wiht the messy job

the front side windows are easy to do. i used brand new razors on my front 2 windows when i needed to get inspected. make sure you soak it. i used windex and my windows were scratch free. i did my girl's rsx front windows in like 30 mins. haha trick is to peel the tint as 1 big piece.

its actually really simple to remove the rear tint without damaging your defroster lines...
u will be basically baking the tint off... first you will need to get some tarp to cover up your rear deck... take a big black garbage back and cut it open and place it on the outside of your window... cut the garbage bag to the size of the window... then u will need pure ammonia... spray the inside of the tint with the ammonia and then take the garbage bag you cut on the ousdie and put it on the inside of the window... so you will have the ammonia between the tint and the garbage bag...
park the car with that side facing the sun windows up, and wait an hour... wat happens is that the sun is absorbing the heat into the garbage bag and then heating up the glue so that it is soft when you start to peel off the tint...
after one hour, check the tint.. start from a corner and start to peel back slowly... make sure that the tint is peeling in one piece... if it starts to separate, it needs more heat... let the car sit some more...
it is a pain in the ass but is effective and works really well.. i bought a car that had dried out and peeling/chipping tint that looked unsalvagable... this got all the tint off and saved the defroster too...
good luck... and be careful with the ammonia.. it is very strong... if u feel yourself getting light headed, take a break...
