Removing Resonator

What exactly does removing the resonator do? Jus make sound louder or like does it help in performance? and anyone know how to remove it? well of course, but any write ups on it?

Intake or Exhaust?

Both will increase sound levels. Intake might actually free up a
couple of horses... but exhaust side I can't imagine it gaining
anything.

Removed intake resonator sounds pretty nice... removed exhaust
might sound a bit ricy.

Sorry, I should have referred to the Intake Resonator

I posted detailed intructions on how to remove it. Just do a search for resonator. Taking it off makes your car sound WAY better at WOT, but WOT alone. So unless you are flooring it your car sounds the same. But once you are flooring it at about 4000rpm, wow does it ever sound nice a throaty. Mild HP, nothing too noticable. But yes mild HP gains. Definately worht it however, becuase its free!

yea..it does make it sound alot better with the resonator off...but you'll want more and then order the CAI like I did...it's just a matter of time..

This has been beaten to death. Do a search.

short synopsis:

1) resonator is there to reduce intake howl but it also optimizes low and midrange torque via Helmholtz resonator effect
2) Removing may produce a few horse at the highest rpm, BUT lower down below. Unless you drive WOT all the time, might do more harm thsn good
3) It soundslouder- and to some that means quicker.

This may be OT but it's an interesting question: How does the Helmholtz resonator effect produce a net gain in midrange torque?

Here's a good explanation of what Helmholtz Resonance is.

Daveman,

So, are you suggesting that leave resonator on would actually improve the performance?? Assume the resonator was designed properly...

I had removed mine...BIG difference in sound, but only heard when you stomp on the gas...You even get the "woooooo" humming sound while idling, something like an intake, when you tap the gas, there's that "hiss" and when shutting the car off... It's not as loud as CAI, but sounds a lot better, IMO... My friend with a '99 vette went for a ride with me and said my car sounds like a V8 when stomping it, he liked it a lot, then called me crazy...

Did I mention its free? And that it can be put on as easily as taken off.

Try this.

http://www.mecc.unipd.it/~cos/DINAMO...suonatore.html

or

http://grapeaperacing.com/GrapeApeRa...ehelmholtz.htm

I'm getting a bit tired of the sound. So I'm putting it back on tonight.
Back to stealth speeding.

I keep telling you guys - these engines are closed-loop and pretty well dialed-in. One size fits all intakes are just as likely to hurt perf as improve it. No small epeciality mfr. has the pockets deep enough to tailor every system to every car's plenum, intake velocity, etc. I am all for having fun, but I find the sound annoying and the claims suspect. To each his own, but caveat emptor.

Thanks Closer, those articles are pretty interesting. At least now I kinda understand why the butterfly valves on the Type S intake plenums work. I guess the valves change the volume of the plenum (thus changing the natural frequency of the plenum), and changing the cylinder's displacement volume (by serving all 6 cylinders instead of just 3).

Yeah, that also explains a lot of the reason why short ram intakes aren't very effective. Beyond just getting hot air, you have such a small amout of intake volume that it puts it's peak power gain above what's usuable. With such a short intake stack, the peak power probably comes at some 8000+ rpms. Well more than what our engines can do.

Adding/Removing the resonator is noticable. I felt the difference immediately apon reinstalling it. Throttle response and power in the lower to mid range was back. But, I did lose top end. Maybe I spend a little too much time in WOT at 80mph, but it feels choked with the resonator back on. But, for now I'm too lazy to take it back off. I'm not taking it to the track and have yet to do many races, so it's not worth the hassle.
