You can't exactly keep the factory alarm system. You will need to have a system which will override the stock one. Directed electronics makes the best (you will see them as company names like Viper, Hornet, or Clifford but they are the same thing). I recomend the 2-way responder systems. Knowing if it turned on succesfully and the added range on them is well worth it.

Warms up your car too. Not to mention on cold days, you can jump in and turn on the heat and its warm already.

Had my remote start for 2 years now with no problems. Just get it installed right.

Does anyone have trouble with their remote starters when its cold out? I have the Viper alarm with remote start and I find that when its cold out it takes 2 or 3 cranks when using the remote start to start the car. Is this normal? Will this do any damage to my car? Thanks.

What do you mean 2 or 3 cranks. You mean it takes it 2 or 3 times to get teh car to start? or it cranks 2 or 3 seconds?

Either way its not hurting the car. Its no different and not doing any thing different than you would with a key.

i heard from a friend that the old legends had the built in remote start. all you have to do is ask the dealership to do it. i don't know if that's true or not. has anyone heard about it before? i mean, i heard that some dealership will hook it up for your car from your stock alarm. i don't know if its true so i'm asking on here. seems to have all the answers. lol =)

I think what they do is just install an alarm that uses the stock keyfob and if that is used then you wont be able to use the remote to unlock the car once the car has been remote started. Only by using the key on the door.

What I mean is when I push the buttons to remote start the car, the engine will crank (as it normally does when using the key) but for some reason the motor will not turn over so it will stop momentarily and then crank again until the motor finally turns on. Hope that made sense?? My car will try to get started about 2 or 3 times if it's really cold out when using the remote start but eventually it does start. I'm just hoping the starter or something else in the car won't get damaged because of this. Thanks again.

I found using synthetic oil really helps the car start up faster in the cold weather as it turns over a lot easier.
My remote usually starts on the first try and second if it is really cold here in the GTA.

So I'm not the only one experiencing this with their remote start. That's good to know. I'll try your idea with using synthetic oil to help with the cold weather starts. Thanks.

well, there should be a setting on how long the alarm brain signals the motor to crank for, like my viper 791. it gives older batteries and sketchy starters the benefit of the doubt to start...

The same thing happens with my DEI (with stock alarm). It only happens once in a while, but it pisses me off. Its most prevelant during colder months, but even happens during the summer here and there. I have a fairly new battery (1 year old) and i don't have a lot of electronics in the _on_ position in the car.

I need to find the manual for the module i have installed and see if i can adjust the amount of cranking time by a hair. This would resolve the problem

Can you give some details on what model DEI you have? Also what was the cost for the unit + installation? I installed the last remote start I had, however I do not feel like dedicating that amount of time to a project again. What was involved in programming your factory key fob to work with the aftermarket unit? Thanks for the time.
