Rearview mirror question
Rearview mirror question
Hey,
I just got my 2002 3.2 TL's inside rearview mirror replaced today by the dealer under warrenty. Parts of the glass was not dimming when I press the AUTO buttom anymore (mostly on the sides and the left). The service rep told me interesting thing....she said my EZ PASS directly in front of the mirror can cause the mirror to go bad. Does anyone see any logic/truth in what she said?
Thanks

I am not buying the ezpass explination. They use RF and it should not interfere with the operation of your mirror. These mirrors have ahd a history of quitting. Do a search and you will find replacement info other then the $tealer.

It's a known problem and EZPass has nothing to do with it.
Donnelley, the company that makes the mirrors has issued a recall for them. A lot of people on the board got a new one for free. I think the recall period is over though (from what other members have posted).

I'm not familiar with EZPass, but I had a similar problem with mine - we have parking tags that we have to hang on the rearview to park at my office, and whenever I have it hung on the mirror my auto-dim fails to work - in fact, it stays dim ALL THE TIME, which is quite irritating during the day. I finally figured out why - there are two sensors: One is a sensor in the front of the mirror, and another one facing the back. My presumption is that these sensors compare the light on both sides, and adjust accordingly. So that when the front is dark, and the rear is bright (such as when someone is behind you with headlights), it dims accordingly. In my case, I had it pitch black in the front due to the parking pass, and the normal daylight in the back sensor was enough to force the mirror to dim. I ended up taping my pass to my radar detector cord (mounted near the ceiling), which is up and away enough from the mirror to eliminate the problem
Maybe that type of behavior is what she is referring to - shouldn't cause it to fail, but may cause some other issues during day-to-day driving.
