Angry Rearview mirror

I parked my 99 TL at the Nashville airport over the weekend. When I got back to drive it home, I noticed there was a "hole" in the film of the rearview mirror. THere is a long, elliptical portion of the mirror that is not dim at all. At night that portion doesn't dim, and causes all headlights to appear with "double vision". I suppose I have to get the whole durn thing replaced.. over a $100 repair because rearview mirror isn't covered by extended warranty. ANy body else have this happen to them?

Hole Migration

Hmm.. this "bubble" in the film seems to be migrating around the mirror now! it has moved up a couple of inches... so now half of it is off the mirror. weird!

I remember reading for dimming mirrors to just use water to clean them. apparently windex or other cleaners will strip/damange to coating.

can you try to press out the bubble with your fingers?

Exclamation the auto dim rear view mirrors are filled with a special liquid and if

the liquid ruptures it will look like you have a spot, or fluid looking marks behind the glass of the mirror? mine was covered under warranty.kman

I wish I had a digital camera to take a picture. It's not really a "bubble", per se, that's the only way I can think to describe what's going on. It's just a region in the mirror that looks uncoated with the anti-glare stuff. (It looks like a regular mirror). Only, this region has been changing shape throughout the day. Last night (and this morning) the "un-dimmed" region covered the middle third of the mirror, in an elliptical shape. It has since moved upward, so that only the top of the mirror seems "un-dimmed" now. I'll see what happens over the next couple of days, at least the un-dimmed portion is in a less offensive postion now, esp. for night driving.

Get one of those "wide angle" mirrors as replacement. Only $15 and tint your windows if didn't do so.

the clamps that clamp the wide angle mirrors to the rearview are very hard ( pressure ) and can cause the mirror casing to rupture. kman

Had one on each of the cars I had before and never heard of anything like that. Get a Broadway or something that's not so hard (pressure).

I had exactly the same rear mirror problem too. It happened about several months ago. The mirror first lost the dimming function in a small area, later half the mirror and now the whole mirror. The liquid (black) leaked out yesterday from the on/off switch. My mirror just became a regular rear view mirror now, no more auto-dimming function. To get a new one is expensive too,I don't think I will fix it....

The easiest fix is to put an aftermarker wide angle mirror, forget about the sotck one if it's not covered by warr.

as a matter of fact the broadway does have alot of pressure, at least enough to wack my mirror, and just so happened to be the culprit of my mirror exploding! kman. p.s. anyone want a broadway mirror?
