After you push the button, give it about 15-30 seconds to dim or un-dim. It isn't instant. If you wait, it should happen even if someone isn't shinning a light from the rear. You can see it change in daylight.

Both PlanoTLS and iliveinapathy are referring to the auto-dim button which is located on the middle bottom (non-Onstar) of the rear view mirror. When pressed, a small round green light will appear right above the button indicating that the auto-dim feature is on. When pressed again, the auto-dim feature will turn off as well as the green light.

Run your hand under the rear view mirror. You should feel a button. That is most probably the one he is referring to.

run your fingers along the BACK of the mirror near the windshield. you should feel a small depression where an ambient light sensor is located. cover it with your fingers and wait a few seconds. by covering this sensor, the mirror will think it's "night" out. the ambient daylight around/behind you will be interpretted as headlights and the mirror should dim.

i thouhgt the sensor for the dimmer was in the back of the rear view mirror. because when i had my parking permit for college and used to hang it on the rear view mirror and i noticed it was dim in dayligt and then when i took it off it un-dimmed...
