My mirror is starting to show different shades too - I've wrapped it with plastic bags hoping it won't explode.

The MD site is down - Called Park Ave Acura NJ and they said they don't cover it and I have to call Acura HQ, will do that in a bit.

I am not sure if wrapping it in plastic would help. From what people have said it will eat through plastic so it might be better to remove the mirror from the car. I do hope that Acura will replace the bad mirrors for free for people.

I just got off the phone with Acura Client Services. They had no information about a recall or replacement. They suggested that I go to the dealership. Luckily I had taken the mirror out when the bubble developed back a few months ago. After getting the runaround from MD, I guess I'm going to have to take it in there.

How about thgis conversation with my dealer:

Me "How much to install a new rear view mirror?"

Dealer "1 hour job, 96 bucks, but be prepared every now and again, the windshield cracks. It's rare but it happens."

Me: "But you guys would cover the windshield and give me a new one right?"

Dealer "No, you would be out of pocket on that."

Me: <Dumbfounded look on my face> <hangs up phone>

That is retarded.

Dealer: "Yeah, we broke something on your car while trying to fix something else, but we're gonna need you to go ahead and pay for it, mmmkay?"

Me: "Get a life"

Update: Acura Client Services has agreed to cover the entire cost of replacing my rear view mirror. They were really nice about it. Going in to the dealer tomorrow.

Pretty simple. I called Acura Client Services and explained the problem and that I was worried about the mirror exploding. I was very nice and told them I understood my car is out of warranty but if there was anything they could do out of good will I would appreciate it.

Acura had me go to the dealer to look at the mirror. I was overly nice to the dealer as well. The dealer said it needed to be replaced and called Acura C/S.

Acura agreed to cover parts and labor. 100% I have an appointment tomorrow. I plan to bring a dozen donuts for the techs...

My service adviser mentioned to me that she thought Acura would cover at least the part - she said if you call and are very nice and friendly they will almost always pay for something. If you call and scream and complain - you will most likely get nothing.

Angry Me too..

Well, I've had the same issue with the mirror. It didn't "explode" but has discolored and leaked some stuff on the gearshift plate, melting it. Going to take it to the dealer, play nice and see what happens. My repeated calls and emails to Dani and others at Magna Donnley have gone completely unanswered.

I'm open to the latest suggestions.

So i talked to our friendly Acura Client Services and I have to take the car into be investigated. So the mirror has to stay on when you take it in or they may claim "Whomever took it off doesen't know how to remove 4 screws, depress a cable connecter and slide down the mirror. " sorry I'm ranting. So come monday-ish I'm headed to Acura wohoo

So today I took m car in to Service at my local dealership. They had made a claim with ACS and they were going to put the new mirror in $20 (US) out the door. Pretty sweet considering they saved me a trip to the car wash too. Not only that the mirror has a 1 year 12,000 mile warranty on it. So to everyone who has a problem with the rearview mirror: Step 1) call acura Client Services. Step 2) act concerned about the mirror (this shouldn't be too difficult) if you have it off do not mention it. Step 3) before you head over to the service dept reinstall the mirror. Step 4) be nice to the Service reps. Step 5) wait for the okay to come along from the service rep Step 6) take it back again (with a slight build-up of dirt on the car) Step 7) have a car wash and a new mirror for the price of labor. Step 8) Start modding.

Wow! I just found this thread and like many others I'm very thankful for everyone's helpful in put. My wife has been driving around for months with a cracked mirror and luckily no liquid has spilled out. I'm going to remove it (very carefully) today. I called Dani and left a message with all my info, I also emailed her so we'll see if I get a response anytime soon. Before calling Dani I called Acura CL, but they said there is no known problem and my best bet is to call the local dealer. I called the dealer and the technician said since I am the second owner and I don't normally service my vehicle there, that they service manager would more than likely decline my request to replace the mirror. He said I can come down and present my request in person and the service manager will make a decision. I think I'll wait for a response from Dani.

Thanks again for everyone's input, this site is very helpful.

Did you follow these steps? there shouldn't be too much difficulty, especially if you say you have owned a honda(this also means acura) before = Brand loyalty.

Why not just follow the directions right above you? Call Acura Client Services and let them know of your problem and they should take care of you.

I wasnt so lucky. I went to the Stealership and they told me it would be 192 bucks to replace and no they wouldnt do it for free. Then i called ACS and they got back to me but they wanted to see my "service records" to see if I maintain my car..and then make a decision from there wether or not they were going to "good faith" the mirror.

I dont see how service records such as 30k, 45k, 50k has to do with my damn rear view mirror So I just ordered a new on online and it came out to 72 bucks!

As I undestand it, Magna Donnelly did revise the mirror design to eliminate the fluid leak risk. So hopefully you did get the new design. Was your mirror sold as a brand new item?

Did you check to see how much a new mirror would cost through Acura? Before I was able to get a free replacement from Magna Donnelly, I found new ones selling for about $100 through an Acura dealer. I probably would have bought one through Acura those before taking chances on an eBay purchase.

In any case, best of luck with the new mirror.

Sounds like Magna Donnely is tired of giving away free mirrors. They're probably just ignoring all these requests now. If they don't want to replace the mirrors free anymore the least they could do is sell them at cost to people with the defective ones.

I've also sent several emails, left phone messages and even sent a fax and have heard nothing back from Magna Donnely. I gave up waiting on them and ordered a new mirror from hondacuraworld.com. I had rather pay than have the mirror leak and mess up the interior.

I would have done the same thing. Based on the reports of other forum members, a leaking mirror can do a lot of damage to the center console and the leather seats.

Keep your old mirror in the event Magna Donnelly resumes the free replacement program. (In the past they have asked for the old mirror back after you receive the replacement.) Then you could at least get a free spare.

There was behind the scenes negotiations with Honda and Magna about who should be covering cost- part of cost or what.
They may have stoppped handing them out until thats resolved.
Thats just my best guess

Haha I just noticed this tread yesterday and my mirror has been discolored and black on the bottom for god knows how long probably more than a year. It was like that when i bought it and it had a broadway mirror over it so I really didnt think anything of it. Anyways, does anyone know if I can still contact Dani about this situation?

No Dani will not help nor contacting anyone at Magna Donnelly. See my post here for alternate steps, I believe 2 other people have gotten it replaced this way in the past few months.
