Rear-ended by truck...hit n run
Last night the wife was out in the car. While sitting at a red light a truck rear ends my wife then takes off running. She then calls me up all frantic telling me how hard this truck hit her and everything. Of course I have this picture in my mind of the rear being smashed in. Well, she made this call before she got out of the car to look at the damage. Gets the car home and only damage done is to the license plate holder and some paint chip. What a stroke of luck.

Did she get the plate number of the truck? I've been red-light rear-ended twice in hit-and-runs. The first time I was hit so hard that my car actually was pushed off the road, and they never caught who did it. The second time wasn't as bad, I got the plate number, and they were able to arrest the jerk who did it. Of course, she was on welfare and had no money, so even though she was ordered by the court to pay my deductible, I never saw a dime...

rear end damage
Did you take your car in to have the damage look at, or look at the frame, suspension, etc. yourself?
Some idiot once backed into me in a parking lot - I was following behind him, and all of a sudden he decides to back up to go into a parking space he had passed - without looking in his rearview of course. It felt like a pretty hard bump, but when I got out to look I couldn't see any damage except possibly a couple of scratches on the bumper, so I just let him go without getting his insurance info.
Of course, the next time I take my car in it turns out my front strut was bent and had to be replaced, and the frame was out of alignment.
Hope your car is OK, but just wanted to warn you that appearances can be deceiving.

No, she didn't get the license plate number. I didn't bring the car anywhere to have it checked. I crawled up underneath to make sure there was no hidden damage.
I wish I was driving the car at the time. NO ONE hits me, runs and gets away with it. I'm half tempted to stake out the intersection to see if I can catch the guy.

My wife got hit in her car the other day. Thank goodness she is okay. She was able to get a 2002 Maxima SE as a loaner. I'll still take my TLS, but that 3.5 in the Max has got some good torque. I was nice enough to drop her off at work yesterday. I used that as an excuse so I could test out the Max, hee hee

I am so sorry to hear what happened to your wife. Do a search here on insurance, because there is alot of good advice on how to deal with them to get your claim resolved quicker and for better $$

Laurelcrest...won't be filing a claim. Damage is so minimal, $15 for a new license plate holder and the paint chipping is almost at a microscopic level. I'm really surprised at how minimal the damage was considering how hard they hit and considering the thought it was enough of a reason to run

Anyway, glad your wife was ok.

Ken....the stakeout is blowing off steam. I know it would be a complete waste of my time. Especially since the best the wife can describe the vehicle is "custom truck".
But as far as not letting a hit n run driver get away. Been there, done that and they didn't get away. Back when I owned '78 Rally Sport I was rear ended one night so bad it made my car undriveable. The person that ran into me drove off. I chased them for 5 blocks on foot until they pulled into an apartment and ran inside.
And I bet the majority of the people at this site wouldn't let the peretrator get away scott free. They would at the very least get a license plate #, partial # or make and model of the vehicle.

I just wanted to say what a bunch of shallow b*stards all of you are. I keep hearing stuff like "glad the wife is ok". What about the car? That's the most important thing......wives are easily replaced, a good car is harder to come by. j/k

That's what bumpers do! They absorb shock with minimal damage to the car.
I once rear-ended a nervous old lady because I was following her, turning right onto a cross street when she suddenly stopped. We both got out and examined our cars--not a mark! We smiled and went our separate ways.
Good old energy dissipation devices.

A story when I was about 18 years old.
My dad used to frequent a store right by Rockefeller Center in Manhattan. I had to sit in the car and watch out for the "Brownies" writing tickets (they finally changed their brown uniform to Navy/black/grey or something) while he shopped. Well if one comes in view, you better leave cause they are fast to place a ticket under your wiper. So if I saw one, I would have to leave and drive around the block. Well after a few laps of waiting for people to cross, let alone the lights, I came up behind a old Accord waiting for the pedestrians to cross to make the left turn. As I'm doing the same behind him, my eye caught a girl (to my left) standing at the corner waiting to cross .
When I saw the car in front of me start to move, I had to take another look but started to roll at the same time. Well..... when I looked at her, she was looking right at me this time....stupid ass me, we kept staring at each other, all the while the car in front of me had to stop for another pedestrian. While eye contact was being held, I rear ended the car in front. Oops, right in the middle of the afternoon in midtown Manhattan with hundreds of people as my audience.
She had a look of shock, but thankfully never laughed......as far as I saw. I'm sure she laughed later.
The Accord and I pulled over and the couple asked if I'm OK and saw no apparent damage and let it go . It could have easily been a huge lawsuit for all I know.
FKNA, it would be a safe and good precaution to check it out but unlike my sisters hit and run by a NYC Sanitation garbage truck pushing it sideways. Getting hit directly in the rear may be less prone to the suspension getting bent as a hit in the rear makes the car roll forward so to speak. But the impact is still a potential for concern(Keep in mind I'm no pro, it's just my opinion). My sisters Camry had it's struts bent(visibly). (Over a two years ago but the claim is still in processing
Good luck.
