Rear brakes stuck due to rusted rotors.

Hi all. Well I was out of town on business for a little over 2 weeks and my car sat outside at the airport for the whole time. When I finally got to the car, I fired it up, got my payment ready and let the engine idle for a minute and when I put it in reverse, it would not roll. I gave it a little gas and nothing so I thought I left on my parking brake. It was off but still the car would not roll. I gave it it quite a bit of throttle and it sounded like it was dragging. I put it in drive and gave it a little throttle (carefully, there was a car in front of me) and boom, boom the rear brakes released. When I pulled away from the spot, I looked and where the rear tires were, there were 2 skid marks about a foot long each where I went backwards. I know rotors rust when they are not being used and disc brake pads always touch the rotor surface but man, I have never had a brake stick like that. I did a few gentle brake applications at freeway speeds to knock off the rust so all is well now. Has anyone else had the same problem? Eric.

there shouldnt/couldnt be enough oxidation on the rotors to produce that much rust on rotors. yea they will get the surface discoloration, but if there was that much there would be pits and groves in teh rotors. it was more likely that the last thing touched before getting out of the car was the brake pedal and the pads were pushed tight onto warm rotors causing them to stick a little??

First for me too. I knew our rotors rusted but only a discoloring, not a rust build up. I guess I never left my car long enough to know. Interesting though.

It seams more likely that your brake cable did not release fully rather than the rust on the rotors causing the brakes to stick. You can test this theory by applying your parking brake and releasing it. Then try backing your car up. If the brakes are locked up then its your brake cable not releasing.
