dead battery

so i let my car sit for like 2 days without starting it. i started it on the 3rd day and it took like 2 cranks for it to start, but worked fine. i let it run for about 5 minutes. it sat again for another day or so. then i drove it and everything was fine.
soooo today i go to pepboys to look for some turtle wax tire wax (they didn't have any by the way) and i go out to my car and try to start it. i hear the starter clicking but it won't turn over.
i go back into pepboys and ask the dude for a jump. it starts right up.
when i get home, i charge my battery, but the little black eye on the battery stays black and doesn't turn green (green means it has a good charge). then i start it and it takes like 5 cranks to turn over. so i'm guessing my battery is dead and i need a new one. whats the best battery? i want one that looks cool and will last a long time. thanks for any input.
sorry for the long post.

If that's the original battery in your '00 it about the right time for it to go (4 years).

If you want one that looks cool, you should probably get one of those racing-type batteries. Once you see the price tag, you may opt for your basic battery though.

I went through this same decision a few months ago, and I found out that...

the best battery =

Walmart Battery = ~$40
Optima Yellow Top = ~$150

If money is no object, the Optima Yellow Top is the BEST battery you can buy. Deep cycle batteries is not just for big system users. Read about here...

edgalang, do you remember how much a red top costs vs. your yellow top?

I read on their site that the yellow top is a great battery if you leave your car sitting for weeks or months, but I don't do that generally.

Also, did you have to remove the battery tray for that to fit in there?

A Yellow Top costs about $50 more than a Red Top...and yes, I removed the stock battery tray for it to fit. The optima's are smaller (but heavier) battteries than the stock.

I've seen them last anywhere between 18 months to 5+ years (18 months was on a Mitsubishi Eclipse with an OEM batery I used to own). The general rule is that you don't fix what's not broken.

If you're in doubt, take it to an autozone or something similar and have them do a free test on it. They'll test your alternator charging capacity and battery and tell you if something looks wrong. It's quick, and the battery doesn't need to come out of the car.
