Rear brake pads, have to be altered?!?!

Hi,

I just installed Irotors and EBC greenstuff pads on the rear of my wifes 2002 TL-S. The front pads are on backorder, so I only did the rear for now. I ran into a problem and was wondering if anyone else has run into it. The inner pad with the squeel clip has a metal stud at the top of the pad. I am familiar with honda brakes and this stud would fit into the X slot in the piston of the rear caliper, but on the acura there is just a round piston. I compared the old pad to the new and the marking on the back of the old pad looked like the piston would hit that stud and not sit flat on the back of the pad.

I called tirerack, where i ordered them from, and they were clueless and asked me to call EBC. I called EBC and they werent alot better, the guy looked up the part number and confirmed it was the correct part number and looked at a diagram that didnt show the back of the pad so that didnt help. He just said try them and if they dont work, send them back.

Well I tried them but I was sure they wouldnt work. After driving some and hearing the rears rub nonstop. I pulled the inner pad out again and sure enough, the piston was only contacting the stud and it was causing the pad to only touch the rotor at the outer edge. Rather than having to put the old pads back on, i decided just to grind that stud off and respray them with anti squeel spray. They seem to be fine now but I am curious if anyone else has run into this. I have never had to alter brakepads before, and I have changed quite a few in my time.

Thanks

THANK YOU so much for posting this! I was going crazy trying to figure out how to solve this problem. I am installing rear pads on my wife's Acura CL. I have spent half the morning trying to get these to fit. Like you, I have never had to alter brake pads before this. It's insane that these are like this. I hope you never had a problem with yours in doing this...wish me luck and thanks again!! David

Do you mean those little nubs on the back of the rear pads? Those nubs have to be shaved or grinded off.

I have a post out there right now asking about my rear pads on my 99, since I put them on I'm hearing a slight wasping sound and still have some squeaking, do I have to do this to my pads too???

No you dont, the alteration some had to do to get teh pad to seat on the caliper correctly. Did you have the rotors turned or replace the rotors?

No I didn't turn or replace them, but even though I didn't do either, I still shouldn't be hearing any wasping sound or screaching when I press the brakes, the sound I'm hearing is similar to the sound of the old pads because they were worn down, I'm thinking.......could it be brake dust???????

Well it may be because the new pads arent seating flat on the rotor due to wear. Thats why you should always turn or replace rotors when replacing pads.
