Red face RE Tinting

This is so confusing....I read all the messages about tinting.

I went to 3 different places today to check out how they do and how much it will cost me.

One said, they have to sand the matrix in the back to level out so that there won't be any bubbles. Hmm..that scared me..and they charge extra $40 for it. This place was recommended by one of the persons on this forum. He said it's acid wash? hmmm..what's that.

Another place is cheaper, but didn't say anything about bubbles... I wonder how they will do.

Another place, they said, they take out your back seats, door panels, etc...basically, they rip everything apart and put the tint on. This scared me too. (they actually showed me the pic) This place was recommended by my dealer. hmmm...wonder why.

NOW....where am i supposed to go? Any suggestions. I live in Southern California.

removing panels is better if you consider the fact that they use an enormous amount of soapy water when they clean glass, and apply and set the tint. they will also be able to get the tint down into the minute places leaving a cleaner edge. also, most panels can produce lint which will hinder a nice install. laying down towels will be enough though.

so the tl/tls also have a dot matrix area to be concerned with? i know my previous car, 2000 accord coupe, had that problem so i never tinted the car. i am considering buying the tls soon but have yet to inspect one on alot.

what places did you try? i'm in socal too so i know a couple of places...kooltint, protint, california tint, vicelli's, tint shop, vip center, etc.

I just got my tint installed yesterday, at Bumper 2 Bumper in Westlake Village, CA (next to Thousand Oaks - near Los Angeles / Ventura county border). It was $225 for 5 windows (no tint on the windshield).

I did 50% on the front side windows, 20% on the back 3. Titanium tint on the side windows, and a non-metallic tint on the rear window. The tint come with a lifetime warranty that covers bubbling and defects. The warranty does not cover purpling or negligence on my part (if I scratch the tint, for instance). I did the non-metallic on the rear window because of the antenna - this is what I wanted, but before I even told them this they told me that is what I would have to get, so they were well aware of that rear antenna that is showing up on lots of new cars.

When I got my quote last Friday, they happened to have a 330i parked outside with the exact tint job that I wanted. I liked the results, so that's why I ended up getting what I did.

here's both my opinion and most facts

The tint shop can tint over the dots in the rear window. I know this for a fact because my TL is tinted. They do not have to sand it down or acid whatever. Most tint shops will say they have to to charge more. Basically it boils down to this: Tinting over the dot part in the rear window is a pain in the ass. It's difficult to get the tint to stick. If the tint shop is cool they will take the extra time needed and tint it right like mine is.

If you can't find a place to do it like that don't worry, my friend has a 99 TL with tints and the tint place stopped just below the dots and it looks fine. The pattern is black which makes it look dark and I didn't even notice that his wasn't tinted in that spot until he pointed it out to me.

AS for removing the seats and panels... that too in not necessary. Yes, they use a LOT of soap and solution to tint the windows. If you go to a real good tint shop they will have the right equipment to make sure nothing gets on your seats (blankets, sheets, whatever). Now, I don't want to be misleading, good tint shops will remove the panels and seats, but DO NOT let them charge extra to do so, it would be part of the normal tinting process. Of course, if you walk in paranoid about them damaging your car, a less than reputable shop will see an easy opportunity to charge you extra for normal services. I see it this way, if they aren't confident enough that they can't guarantee no damage to your interior when tinting, I wouldn't trust them to take apart MY $30K+ car.

Some people may disagree with me, but I will tell you this. I have taken 7 of my own cars and 6 of my friend's cars to get tinted, so I do have some experience in this. I've gone to several different tint shops and am only reporting my experiences. I'm not making any part of this up.

Unhappy

i tried these places: protint, california tint, vicelli's...

the idea of ripping my car apart doesn't sound assuring...once u take it apart, you can never put it back into factory installed shape.

I didn't know tinting can be pain in the A$$

Getting my TL-S windows tinted next week -- $149 for regular tint at LA Tint in Northern VA. Pretty much the same price at all the other places I've had my car windows tinted at over the past 20 years. LA Tint prefers to sell you the more expensive tint -- they say it'll remain clearer over the years. I've never had a problem with the regular tint on any of my cars; HOWEVER, I only lease for 3 years. No problem with bubbles or it peeling back, with proper care.
Living in VA, I go with the legal 50% on front side windows and 35% on rear side and back windows. I really wouldn't want it much darker than that anyway because it might be too difficult to see out at night, e.g., backing up.

Cool

When my car was tinted the guy who did it kind of sanded the matrix on the rear window. This helped the tint to stick better, which it did, and I have no bubbles etc. I went with metallic tint all the way around and haven't had any problems with radio reception etc. All the guy removed for the back window was my third brake light. For the sides, he removed the side panels. That's really the right way to have it done.....

Thumbs up

No need to take the car apart. I use a shop name Pro Tint in Temple City. Do a very good work. It is recommended by dealer. They do did a wash on the dot area though. Total cost is $190. It took around 1 1/2 hour. I went there 3 weeks ago. This shop did an excellent work. I have all my windos tint. Hope this work.
