Radar Detector Questions
I don't know what other topic to post this under, so I guess I'll do it here. I am looking for a GOOD radar detector that will mount discretely into the TL. Something without wires that looks good is what I am after. I don't care if I have to have it installed, as long as it is good. Any ideas?

Some of the members here have gone with the Valentine-One. Has great mounting options and accessories. Check it out.

Yep - I have my V1 stealth-installed at the top-center of my windshield. You can't see if from outside the car, hidden behind the blueish-tinted band. I hard-wired it to power with a concealed display mounted on top of the steering column, all wires concealed. I love that thing! Warns me any time "the man" is around. I should take some pics.....?

TL DADDY: If you have some pics to post, I would like to see them. What is your take on wireless radar detectors? Are they as good as normal ones?

How big is the Valentine-1? Also, does anyone know anything about the Whistler 3300 remote mount? Thanks for all of the help so far...

Hey I don't think it's ugly Looks kinda cool. Tells me where the cops are even when I can't see them. Really works good.

It looks ok, but is a little big for my taste. Does the steering column unit have to be installed? Ideally, I would like to have a detector that I cannot see (except for a few lights). Is the Valentine-one that superior? If not, is there anything close that I could trade off performance for aesthetics?

valentine one does make a concealed display unit for you to put anywhere in the car it is about the size of a pager even smaller, it just has the displays on it, and you can mount it anywhere, they put the sensors in the front bumper and rear, pretty discreet!!
heres the link, read up on it,

I am looking for the same type of thing for my TL. I am seriously considering the K40 undetectable front\rear. It is a VERY cool design and is very stealth. My friend has it in his BMW 323i and Lexus RX300. You can barely tell it is there. Check out the website @ http://www.k40.com/K40Radar/CustomRemote.htm

Actually the prices range since K40 has different options. If you go the K40's website and tell me what model you want info on, that would help out GREATLY! In general though, for something like the SW3000 I think it's called (not exactly sure) around $150 - $175 to install.

How about ballpark pricing for a Front\Rear K40 undetectable w\o laser for 2000 TL??
Also, do you have any pics or suggestions where a good place is for the 2 LEDS and the volume\adjuster knob???

I would go custom and put the LEDs in the rearview mirror or in the clear plastic that covers the intrument panel. As far as the knob, someplace easily accessible, like in the side of the cupholder area (inside it), the flip down compartment under the radio, or something like that.

Front, Rear undetectable but WITH Laser... I mean if I'm gonna get a top of the line I might as well get the works...

Good point...I think K40 has two laser options. One that is the license plate that diffuses the laser, and another that will just detect it. I think the plate retails for like $250 or $300.

LOL... it sounds like the top of the line setup will run close to $2K... now if I can only convince my wife...
What I am wondering about if it really worth the price difference to get the K40 over the V1...

You'd be looking about $800 installed for the UN3000SWL (front/rear laser, superwideband, undetectable).
The unit itself, the UN3000SWL I have for around $630...this is top of the line from K40 though, they do have lesser models.

i have a k40 detector..the $399 one..looks like any other radar. it's very sensitive and can spot cops far away before you can even see the cruiser as a speck. but, sensitivity has it's downside..goes off too frequently around certain shopping strips, etc. it's a good radar overall.
if you want a discrete install, the undetectable k40 is the choice. i've seen a few of these installs, two nsx's, and a benz.
the warning led's can be mounted anywhere..mostly in the instrument cluster and some i've seen in the rear mirror as street mentioned. the main module is hidden from view.

I personally dont have a radar detector but have done considerable research on getting one. I definitely agree with SE about the K40 and if not then atleast a V1, all the others that you read about remote this and that usually lose their strength since batteries are not that reliable over time. I would definitely go with a plug-in... I think I am gonna get a V1 or maybe the K40 at the price that SE quoted that is definitely a steal.. a place by my house wanted well over $1K. Now all I have to do is convince my parents I dont drive fast but want a radar for security...

What about an opinion on the new Escort SR1 remote radar\laser detector?? That looks pretty cool (small remote) and a few tests I have read rated it very high (higher than the K40). The great thing about the K40 is the undetectable aspect of it, but you certainly pay the premium for that!

$800 doesn't seem like a bad price... I'll definitely think about it for my bday in April... hopefully I can find good reviews on the K40 because the setup is very nice but the performance is a bigger issue... Thanx.

IS300,
Do you like the K40?? How much did it cost you, with install??
I am debating the same K40 setup, or maybe the new Escort SR1 remote front/rear radar (not the one with a battery)....which I think is a bit less money, but gets better test results.
Thanks!

For what its worth, I have the BEL remote unit. I used velcro to mount the head unit on the underside of the coin holder in the center console - I can still open the coin tray all the way, and it easily moves out of the way for access to the OBDII socket.
I installed the unit myself, except for the electrical hookup. For about $25 I had the Acura tech hook it up when I took the car in for an oil change. That way (I hope) they can't say I screwed something up and deny me warranty coverage if something happens down the road.
I'm not a maniac driver, and I've used BEL remotes for 10 years without a ticket. Some of you might need more sophisticated technology if your driving habits are more aggressive than mine, but the BEL has worked good for me.
