Ok, i need some help here, i donno if its my car or me, but some days she fly's like a bird, others she is heavy and slow and i know the temp has a lot to do with it, but today just now, i was driving home a prelude pulled up next to me, no exhaust stop rims couldnt hear if he had intake or not, but i was at about 60mpr he sped up to me i droped into 3rd, and went up to 90 and was in 4th, he came up past me fast and kept going, i couldnt drop into 3rd and gave it gas in 4th but sped up very slowly????? is it better to race in manual or the automatic and let the car downshift???? what am i doing wrong here, that im getting whoped at high speeds by these little four cylinders???

You're doing nothing wrong except starting a race at 60mph. That's right at the top of 2nd gear/bottom of 3rd. The Car is a dog if you try to start at 60. It won't drop into 2nd in Auto and you're stuck out of the vtec range in 3rd. Next time SS into 2nd, it'll blink a few times, let off the gas a bit and it'll hit second. Get the last few RPMs out of 2nd and hit 3rd after your momentum builds up. The gear ratio on some of those 4-bangers is such that 60mph is at a place solid in their power band whereas it's a dead spot on ours. Try starting the race at 75 or 50 and you'll see a difference as well.

If you go into manual and drop a gear while gunning it, it probably won't shift, it'll just sit and blink at ya. Drop it and take your foot off the pedal, it'll shift and then slam it.

 

thanx for the advice guys, who has maxed out each gear and knows at what speed u can drop to what gear, without dropin ur tranny??? ive never gone into second at 60, and what is SS and when u say dropin gears, are we talking about manual mode or auto???

What about gate shifting you guys??? Learn what each gear goes to before it redlines.....S.S. is for lazy people.....that way u won't get that stupid computer saying you can't shift into that gear because it is close to redline...try that ...good luck

 

SS??? what does it stand for, from the other convos i take it its not manual shifting, so is that when u down shift in automatic mode just shifting down into third and second while ur driving and trying to pick up speed?

 

SS = Sport Shiftmatic, aka the "manual shifting" ability of the Acura TL and other cars by pressing the shifter up to upshift and down to downshift... It is what most of you have been referring to as manual shift mode ...

Gate Shifting is when you stay in automatic mode, but shift from 1 to 2 to D3 etc ...

 

Try not to eat too much before you get into the car.
