Exclamation Raced a Prelude

Just raced a black Prelude tonight. It had exhaust, not sure if it had anything else. I got on the freeway (I-5) next to him and there were 3 guys in it checking out my car. He sped up but there were too many cars for me to want to go faster than 85-90. When it opened up and there were no more cars I came alongside him slowly and gave him the signal. We started off at about 80 or so. I pulled on him right away and all the way up to about 130. He got exactly one car length ahead of me at 140 MPH, hit his flashers, and we slowed down to sane speeds.

What do you think? Think he was really modded out? I know those 'ludes got some balls at high speeds but how big are they really?

Please, no comments on racing on public highways in my thread -- we were alone on a empty 5 lane highway and its our lives, live your own.

My previous highest speed I've ever gone was 135... I haven't really tried to push the car though. You need a really long, empty, flat area to get going 140+. Too short -- just can't get up enough speed in time. Not empty -- I won't go that fast around innocent vehicles. Not flat -- this is the most important one... at those speeds bumps you wouldn't normally feel risk the rims! Someday I'll get a chance when everything is perfect.

I'm sure it was an SH, else he wouldn't have gained on me at those speeds. :p I had 2 people in my car, even though he had 3 his car was still lighter by almost 500 pounds. But I don't think it has to do with that - I think it has to do with the gearing of our damned tranny! ****ing 4th gear! Or maybe he had NOS? Where are the 'lude fans?

Well I am not suprised! I raced a 2000 Prelude, his is stock. I beat him all the way to 105 no problem with the CLP.... He was about 2 cars behind... but once i hit 4th, he started to pull from behind, and theres really nothing we can do but sit there! Cuz our gearing are soo weak on 4th, and theres really nothing we can do.... Plus, looking at your signature, seems like you have lots of heavy stuff on your car... Systems, and 19s! Even tho you have headers and stuff, I still think your car would weight more than a stock TL... plus the 19s will slow you down alot... Have you ran a TL with the same mod, but stock rims and no system? I wonder how much different would those extra weight made! But watch out for those Preludes... they are not chessy once in high speed!

I'm thinking my 19s don't really slow me down much... they weigh the same as the stock 16s (25.125 lbs)! And theres much less rubber on them so the tire/rim combo for my 19s weighs less than that of the stock 16s.

I would like to run against a TL-S... I am sure I could smoke one!

There are few things you can do to get over the stupid tranny gear ratios...

1. rebuild the tranny

2. swap the tranny

3. trade in the TL for a Lamborghini

hope this helps...

Also, just so you know, regular ludes are a little quicker in acceleration than the Lude Type SH. The SH ludes have an ATTS system which helps with handling but it also adds weight. SO the SH(sport handling) ludes handle better than the base ludes but the base ludes are a bit lighter.

oh while I am so depressed, here is my Prelude story to share. I raced one with exthust before as well. he got a girl sitting next to him while I got my body sitting beside me. Anyways, he exit the ramp first and I had a car in front of me blocking my way. I couldn't catch him and nor could he gain on my after we both gun it. I was catching up slowerly actually but I let it go at 100mph. Where we got in to the traffics and he sure was crazier, cuz he was waving in and out the traffic. I have to say that it would be a close race before 100mph. It was an 5 spd.

I draged with my body's 5 spd prelude at the track before. He got a good launch, so he pulled on me in first gear, I started to gain in 2nd, and was dead even til the end. I lost by a bumper. Same car, raced with his girl, who's a decent 5 spd driver. She got a bad start so I win by about half of a car length.

My body raced with an S2000 before, he got 4 people in the car, and it was down hill. He actually pulled away from the S2000, til, of course the downhill ends....

Preludes are like this...fast stock, but no faster than our TL's. He had it modded, no doubt. Friend of mine used to have one and it would roll, fa sho, but it had it's limits. With the VTEC controller, exhaust and intake, headers, etc...it would be more like the race you described.

About the high-speed racing on the highway....why not go faster? Me and my boy's 3000GT raced this Saturday on Raleigh's beltline...I hit 142 and he hit 125, but was doing a great job weaving in and out of traffic. He's the man...but never gained on tha TL. Mine's totally stock, and has hit 144 with some left...yours should clear 150 easy. Go for it. Grab yo balls, roll up the windows, and plant the right foot....works every time.

uhhh hmm....

just to comment a friend of mine has a prelude sh
and i raced him from stop and i was bout 4 or 5 car lengths ahead (hands down) by the time 60mph
he only had intake and greddy exhaust. ludes acceleration sucks!
i know once they reach up on high end something could happen but no
another thing is whatever you raced out there it defintely must of been modded possibly it could of been nos!

j83, I would bet I would have a better start on him from a stop, but this race was from 80 to 140 -- thats pretty high for our crappy 4th gear. And even then I was ahead up to 130. Between 130 and 140 he only pulled one car length... I'm not sad about it, it was a good race. I would like to know the guys mods though.

it wouldnt really matter if it was an sh. base and sh have same engine and drivetrain only thing different, i believe, is the active torque transfer system that aids in cornering. i race my friends prelude (its an automatic, though) that has v-afc, cai, and exhaust and beat him very easily. i also raced another one that was automatic and beat it......havent gotten the chance to run against a stick version. the h22 is a sweet@$$ engine though.

dont the preludes have DOHC vtec versus our SOHC? doesn't that mean fundamentally, his engine is already breathing better?

Hey aTL. I have a question. Why do you need a TurboXS boost controller if your GS400 is Naturally aspirated???

The Prelude Type SH DOES NOT have any more hp than the regular Prelude. They both have 200hp @7000rpm and 156 lb.ft @5250rpms. In straight line acceleration, one car should not run faster than the other. As said above, the key difference between the two models is the ATTS system in the SH which only helps the car corner better.
