Quick 6-disc upgrade question

I thought I saw the answer to this somewhere on here, but now I can't find it. I have a 99 TL with Nav, I'm looking to upgrade to the 02-03 6 disc stock HU (while I'm in there, I'll install a blitzsafe too...)

To preserve the Nav voice, do I need to get a stereo from an 02 or 03 with Nav? Will I lose the voice if I get a HU from one without Nav?

Thanks

I have a 1999 TL and I have exactly the same question. I've read a pile of threads on this and the answers have been contradictory. Some people have written that the units are absolutely identical while others have written that they are not and that there are wiring differences.

Here's one comment that I found:

CD changer for navi and non-navi are identical, only if you have navi, there are four more wires to the CD changer connector.

And then Justin Olson wrote the following on Page 9 of the huge "navi conversion" thread:

'99 - '03 are all the same, even if it is navi or non navi. The difference between the two are three wires that connect the radio to the navi, so you can hear the womens voice in the driver side speaker only. If you have take the stereo from a navi system you will have to clip the three wires. If you are adding navi, then the opposite you will have to wire the three wires.

Here's the link to that thread:

https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=114084

In one thread it was noted that the radios from navi and non-navi TLs have different part numbers. I called the part guy at my local Acura dealer and he confirmed that the part numbers were different. But he didn't know if that meant the radios were different. But he suspected that they were. He wondered what would be the point of assigning different part numbers if the units were identical.

From my standpoint I would just as soon buy a radio from a navi-equipped TL if that meant that that it was a true Plug N Play swap. I'd rather avoid any wiring changes.

vzuptnguyen,

Does your 2001 TL have the factory navigation system and is your 02-03 6 disc changer taken from a TL with navigation?

6cd radio from 02-03 non-navi will work fine with 99 navi. that's what i did with mine and it plugs right in and everything works fine. don't concern yourself about the extra wires cuz once you see how it unplugs from your original, it'll plug in the exact same way on the new one.

but technically, yes, with navi, there are 3-4 extra wires that are already on a harness of its own that plugs into the back of the radio for the voice. you wont notice it since you're just plugging it in like it was before.

so don't worry, just do it and you'll be glad you did it.

Yes, thanks for the great response... that was just what I was looking for.

One other quick question, if anyone knows... I thought I read somewhere that there's something now that's better than a Blitzsafe... anyone know about that?
