questions about my new Type S
Hey guys! awesome board! I just purchased my 02 TL Type S
2 weeks ago.
A couple questions. Whats the normal break in period for the engine. I got it with 5 miles on the OD and have not taken the engine over 4000RPM at all. Im gonna wait till i hit 1000 miles.
Is this a good break in period?
Also, i havent really played with the SS alot, but i noticed that the other day while starting out in 1 the car automatically shifted to 2 without me shifting it myself. What gives? is this normal? I know while i was waiting for the S to arrive the dealer gave me a 2000 TL to drive and when going WOT in 1st using the SS, it never shifted to 2nd until i shifted it. I could take it past redline in all gears.
Anyways, thanks n advance for anyhelp.

Nice choice. Mine is the same color.
Be gentle on her for 1,000 miles, and you will both be happy.
2000 and older TLs with the 4-speed SS don't automatically shift from 1st - 2nd. It is normal for the TLS, though. If you go WOT, it will go into the red. I'm not sure if it will let you hit the rev limiter, though I doubt it. If you want to have more control, shift it through the gate from 1st all the way up. On the gate, if you put it in 1st it will not automatically shift to 2nd. Also, if you put it in 2nd, it will stay in 2nd until you shift. That means, if you come to a complete stop with it in snd (not in SS, but in the gate), it will stay in 2nd when you start to go. This can be a good thing if it is bad weather, or you do not want to spin the tires pulling out of the girlfriends house.
Anyway, enjoy the smell of the car, how quiet it rides, and just smile at everyone during the break-in. Then, have some fun.
