Question for those with megan or stone headers.

i have a couple questions.

1. what exactly is resonence(sp?) and what causes it? what does it sound like?

2. those with stone or megan headers, how is your resonence? do you have any at all??

reason i ask is because today i made my trip from school to home and the whole way all i could hear is the annoying "clanging" sound from what i can only think is the obx headers. if i hit the accel hard or is i pull off it completly the sound is gone otherwise its constantly there. so i either want to figure out how to make it go away or seriously think about getting a new set of headers cus i cant handle it anymore. thanks guys

yes what your hearing is resonance.. its all normal.. A solotion is to wrap your headers wit hsome of the heat wrap and it'll help reduce the noise..

resonance is caused by the new stainless steel(t304 for megan) is thinner than the oem. As a result, resonance, or airflow sound is transmitted through the cabin

so basically, all headers will give off resonance? that sucks ass. if thats the case i think im going to have to put my stock ones back in. the sound is really getting unbarable for me

wrapping may help a little. I am used to the resonance now and the extra 25HP. take away 25HP after driving with it for a while and you will miss it. Just pretend it's exhaust hum, LOL or get an exhaust and you won't hear it over the exhaust hum.

you need to have your headers tightened then either that or inspect for any cracks. BTW I shipped you that shift knob today first class. what kind of exhaust do you have, must not be that loud?

maybe you should put another gasket on then - I had a resonance when I first had mine installed - when I accelerated (medium) from about 3200 - 3500RPM there was a very slight buzzing sound that you could only hear with the radio off and if you were listening for it. Well I took it back in and they put on new gaskets and tighted the bolts down good and they were perfectly silent (no resonance) till recently - now its only at like 3400 RPM, so Ill probably go retorque the bolts again - its been over 15k miles since I had them on. But they fit perfect and dont hit anything under the car.

overall I have been 100% satisfied with my purchase.

WAIT! Before you go thru all the trouble of 'wrapping' your headers, check a couple things first.

1. Ramp your front end and crawl underneath. Inspect the heat-shield around your catalytic converter. One of the brackets on mine rusted thru and was clanging at first. I orginally thought it was resonance cuz it snapped when the dealer left the pipe hang when installing my headers. It is only a $30 replacement part. After I got it replaced I still had what I thought was resonance although the majority of the clanging was taken care of by replacing the heat shield.

2. If your heat shield is fine, then check the rubber inside the hanger mount (where the headers mount in the hanger). That rubber piece inside the mount dries out and can crack, mine did. Once it cracked the actual hanger on the header was vibrating against the inside of the mounting bracket and causing what I thought was resonance. I got that replaced with a new mount with new rubber inside and voila, no more 'resonance'. So actually I never really had any resonance and my Megans were fine.

Hope this helps bro. G/L.
