Question Question regarding tinting of front side windows in California????

My dad got a note from his eye doctor stating he needed the front side windows tinted on there Lincoln because of his eye condition>>I wonder if that is a legitimate reason to give if pulled over. My windows are tinted, I think at 32% Anybody know???

its probably legit for your dad, but otherwise it is illigal to tint or put any film on the fornt windows of the car in CA. Suppoisedly its not even a fix-it anymore, but I am sure others know more than I do on that.

I always thought the law was...as long as the police officer and see you, the driver inside the car clearly, then there was no problem? I think I asked a cop once and that is what he told me too. Something about wanting to see where your hands were and if there was anything in them. Not Sure though!

Since June/July 2000, it is not a fix-it ticket to have tint on the front windows. I believe the ticket is now a $77 fine (your mileage may vary). You can try to give that excuse while squinting at the police officer

Tint in the front side windows is illegal, but have you checked out the BMW's and MB's blueish tint that it comes with. It's pretty dark as well. But then again it OEM so it legal. These laws are screwed.

Another example is my friend's 96 GTI VR6, it comes with smoked rear lights, but if you smoke them yourself it illegal.

i would not take one cop's advice and apply it to all other cops. each cop has his own opinion. not all cops follow one train of thought. just because one cop says its OK doesnt mean that its going to be OK by other cops. besides, what are you gonna do when you get pulled over, say that another cop said that your windows were OK...i dont think so.
since your dad has a doctor's note, he should hold onto it and show it to the cop. if the cop still gives your dad a ticket, then go to court and present to the judge the note. judges are lenient when it comes to medical reasons, probably because they themselves have medical problems.

SAY WHAT!? I didn't hear anything about that.

As for the doctor's note. That should be legit.

TimmyzTL, if you are from CA, then the front tints must stay under 30% by law. Although anything under 30% is legal, cops can still pull you over for tinted window (because it's hard to judge 30% tints) I guess you have to save your receive that states your tints are 30% or lower.

Cool

I read this from one of those 'small' car magazines long time ago. If you are a Chinese, you should have see those magazines before. Cuz they are everywhere! Anyways, I cant recall in which issue, but I'll try to find the actual legal statement.

I'd pulled over once because of front tinted glass when I drove ACCORD....but they just gave me warning (?) and let me go....
That's one of reasons that I don't have tinted glass on my TL..

Cool

First, I could be wrong, but I believe car tint is measured by how much light is allowed to pass through the tint. So the lower the number, the darker the tint. (Example: 70% tint IS LIGHTER than 30% tint.)

Second, I live in Folsom, Cali and got a "Tint Ticket" about 6 weeks ago. The officer checked off a box marked "correctable" (I think) -- and a couple weeks later I received the "bail" information. Sacramento County wanted $87.00 -- or I could take off the tint, have the ticket signed off, and pay a lower "bail" amount. I decided it was easier to just pay the $87.00 (+ credit card convenience fee) and keep my dang windows tinted!

I figured it took 'em six years to ticket me... maybe it'll be a few more years before they're bored enough to ticket me again! (It was a motorcycle cop. Funny thing was... he did an illegal U-turn to catch up to me! I wish I coulda ticketed him for that! )

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.
