Angry QUESTION: gas mileage

Hey fella's,

i'm just wondering if anyone on the board keeps track of their mileage as far as fuel economy goes? I put 94 in it and in about a week i had to fill it again. I got 221 miles and the 00' TL has a 17.17G tank. divide those two out and you get like 12.8 MPG. that is horrible, my bosses blazer gets 20. well i put 92 in it just recently and got about a week out of it again, and after doing the math i was getting 11.8 MPG. I do admit i'm much of a VTEC addict. my mom drives it to work sometimes and she just leaves it in D5, i always drive it in SS. This tank i am going to go easy upshift as early as possible to see if its me or if its the car. If it is me, then i'll have a bit of relief and i'll just lay off VTEC a bit. But, if its not me, what could be giving me this horrible gas mileage? just your imput, anything would be nice. thanks.

I've been getting bad fuel economy lately b/c I make a lot of short trips and it's the winter time(I think the engine uses more fuel to warm up).

Did you divide your total miles over how many gallons you refiled the car with? You shouldnt divide by the total tank capacity because you dont use the entire tank every time you fill up... I get 17 or so, I keep a log. Most of my driving is going to school, uphill, in lots of traffic When I do mostly freeway driving i get 23 or so mpg. Not great but hey, I only have 4 gears unlike you lucky guys with 5.

I keep a running tally of my gas usage, check it out here:

Click on Fuel Economy on the bottom to see the MPG.

IXLR do it like this: run down to some low level, fill tank and record mileage on odometer or zero the trip meter. Drive until 3/4 of the tank is used up or so. Refill tank to full, record gallons used then. Look at trip meter - say it says 300 miles even. Gallons used lets say was 10. So 300 divided by 10 equals 30 miles per gallon. City driving you should see maybe 19 to 22 and highway 28 to 31, or whatever.

I drive about 22K-25K miles a year.

I often waste gas by accelerating too fast, but who cares.

In mix city and highway I get 22-24 mpg. I never got below 21 mpg even in practically all city driving and having a lead foot too.

With a lot of highway, i average 26-28 mpg. Road trips, I average 26-28 mpg going 80-90 mph, kind of depends how often i downshift to pass cars, or if it's constant rpms.

My best was 31.4 mpg on all freeway doing about 70mph on one road trip.

mileage

I have only had my TL for 2 months (6000 miles ), but I am getting a pretty consistent 26-27 mpg. I would guess that 85% of my miles are highway.

Hitting VTEC isn't really nice for you gas economy so that probably has something to do with it. I'd also check the basic things like a clean air filter, proper tire pressure, proper alignment, not carrying unnecessary extra weight (i.e. dump the dead body that's in the trunk), using cruise control, not blasting the air conditioner, reducing drag, etc.

I don't mean to say you should drive like a blue hiar in the slow lane, just don't expect to be driving like a Formula One car and be getting Honda Civic mileage.

yeah i realized that, so this tank i'm really going to take it easy, and shift early, i dont use the A/C much with the heat on. and i removed that dead body a month ago. either way i'll keep you guys posted. i sure its just my heavy weighted VTEC foot.

I get between 18.8 and 20.5 mpg...

I measure my mileage "satisfaction" in these terms... Before my TL I had a Camry with a 4 cylinder engine. Driving the same routes and routines, I would get around 280 to 300 miles per tankfull which required 14-15 gallons... My TL goes around 270-280 miles per tankfull and fills up 13-14 gallons... I actually get just as good mileage with the TL and it has a more powerful engine to boot!
