Question bout the Gears

01 acura tl.
new to all this, im used to driving a lexus so this is all new to me.

i put my car in D5 (put it in the left slot) when driving, and all my gas goes by within a blink of an eye, and my RPM goes up to 5-6 when im going around 40 MPH.
when i shift the D5 gear to the right slot, its still on D5 but my RPM goes down to around 3. im guessing i should keep it to the far right instead of left. seems to me that it saves gas and doesnt push so much in the transmission. is that right??

I... I don't even... What?

If you "put it in the left slot," then the car enters the sports shift mode. In this mode, you can control what gear the car's transmission uses. In this mode, you should see a number light up under your speedometer. If a number does not appear, then you have a problem somewhere in your car.

If you're interested in using this mode, I suggest you do some reading on transmission shifting. This mode can potentially save you gas if used correctly, and it can also increase your performance. However, I highly recommend that you don't use this mode until you are accustomed to shifting up and down.

In case you are just joking/trolling, well played.

The left slot is Manumatic mode where you actually have to shift by moving the shifter up and down to change gears. Where the right slot is for normal automatic mode. When you put in Manumatic mode you will also see a number on your dash indicating your current gear.

Edit. Agree with post above me. I save a lot of gas using Manumatic but then theres those days when im like hey lets drive in second gear and bam empty tank lol. But its fun.

leave it to the right side in D5 and dont mess with SS -sport shift mode until much later
Its the fastest way to burn out our trans weak 2nd and 3rd gear clutches inside the trans,, a 2500 dollar mistake

When shifter is to the left you are in control of the upshifts
the car has a redline rev limiter that makes it stumble when you try to exceed
In SS mode you would have to shift up at that point

I used to overuse the SS mode and beat the car every day, but then I got a CEL for the 2nd/3rd gear clutch pack. I got worried, reset the ECU, and drove normally. 20k miles later and no CEL or tranny problems. Maybe my car just threw a CEL to complain.

Either way, using SS mode is fun (at least for me). If you learn to shift correctly, SS mode won't harm the transmission any more than the fully automatic mode would. I suggest you practice in a parking lot and take it slow. Don't use it on your daily drive yet, but completely ignoring it would be an insult to your car.

SS mode used to downshift into 3rd and 2nd from max rpms--repeatedly- will overheat and quickly wear out the clutch packs

With most of gen2 out of luck on warranty now--its time to be gentle
If you dont have an owner manual to understand the system and its limitations and correct useage,,register online as shown before

SS is to be in the right rpm/torque to exit the corner apex on the throttle and headed for full throttle as you let it out to the exit point and rocket down the straight to the next corner,,downshift/brakes/turn in/accellerate/upshift/brake/ds/turn/

If thats not part of your driving style--stay out of SS

Invest 200-300 dollars in yourself at a high performance driving class/track day/lapping days at your local roadrace track
Every driver learns,, from something-- to a whole bunch!!
A pro race driver as your personal coach will teach you about shifting and much more

Yup just as others said, keep it in the right slot on d5. You have to manually shift in the left slot but you dont have control over 1st gear.
