Question about SportShift

Was going down a hill yesterday at maybe 70 or 80 mph and wanted to bring it down to 3rd in sportshift to provide some braking.... I accidently downshifted to 2nd instead, but nothing really happend the number "2" flashed a couple of times and it went back to 4th. Anyone know if there is a safety mechanism in the sportshift that limits this?

being at 70-80 mph and downshifting to 2nd gear is a big NO NO and because everything is computerized it was a safety feature to let you know the car won't shift into 2nd gear.

You sure can CL2TLS. I've done it a few times. Although I don't recommend anybody doing it too often. Our TL-S hits redline at around 76 mph in 2nd. There were a few times when I need to merge onto the expressway quick (like when an 18 wheeler coming up strong behind me and he has no where else to go). I would drop it down from 4th all the way to 2nd. Love that g-force when I do that. Keep in mind though that if you have your foot on the accelerator when downshifting to 2nd around 55-60mph, it might just blink at ya and ignore your command. I would normally let my foot off the accelerator, downshift and then punch it. Awesome power. Again, don't do it too often or you'll end up being in the "my tranny gave" posts. Try it, it's fun.

Actually, you can. Instead of using SS, just pull it all the way down to "hard 1st" and "hard 2nd". Problem solved.

Hey axle, this is why I downshifted to 2nd. I rowed it back once and nothing happened so I gave it another tug and the SS indicator displayed 2. But then it flashed rapidly for at least a second and went back to 4th.

It seems like the SS may be tied into the vehicle speed sensor because I'm pretty sure I was doing about 75-80 mph.

75-80mph is too fast for it to go into 2nd. Even if it lets you, you'll be in the red zone. Although I've never tried it, but I think it'll still let you downshift to 2nd if you are 65mph or under using my technique of letting off the gas.

Yeah...just read the manual...it talks about the speed sensor and when it will allow you to shift into what gears. There was quite a bit of thought put into the tranny by the engineers. It's not indestructable, but nearly fool proof.

Just what I was thinking. It is utterly stupid to ever drop your gears down to 2nd @ 70 or 80 MPH.

ok I tried dropping into 2nd today around 55-60. All i have to say is I was gone, it took off pretty quick, and the sound it made was so addicting. Its bone stock, but I would love to hear one with a CAI!!!Thanks axleback for the info!

Just to let you know.....If you race someone and downshift to 2nd anytime on the highway, you'll get power, but you won't launch as well than if you were in 3rd gear unless you were less than 55 mph then don't waste your time. I get killed by other racers when I shift to 2nd at 55+. You'll only lag. Noise way to make your car scream though.

hehe...awesome. Should hear it with CAI, exhaust, and headers like mine. The sound is even more addicting.

Sure it is stupid to do it on purpose, but as axel had mentioned perhaps it does not downshift if you have your foot on the gas pedal.

SS won't let you drop to 2nd when you are around 70 or 80 mph. There's no point in doing that anyway since it already hits redline. I said in my original post that you can still drop it down around 50-60mph. It would be stupid if somebody would drop it down to "hard 2nd" (not SS). But since the SS is synchronized with the computer, it won't let you do anything to ruin the tranny like that.

On a side note, just because I hear all these tranny problems being posted, doesn't mean I won't drive the car like how it's designed to be driven (semi-hard). The TL-P might be designed to be driven softer, but since I got the more powerful engine, I'm gonna use it. Besides, the true power difference doesn't really come into play until you hit higher revs between the TL-P and TL-S. So, if the tranny goes, so do my love for the car. Until then, I'm gonna drive it like the ***** it is. Love my TL-S.
