question about lowering car

okay im thinking about lowering my car, the thing is i dont have the funds to get lowering springs. So i am going to be doing the drop the "poor man's way" (cutting the springs). I just wanted to know how many coils i should cut. i'm riding on 18in rims with 245/40 tires. i'm looking for about a two finger gap between wheel and fender. any input would be appreciated.

If you are able to afford 18" rims, I would suggest you wait it out until you can afford the springs. Patience is the key!I'm sure most of us here agree that cutting the springs will not make your car happy. It'll hurt your car in the long run. All my buddy's who have cut springs hated their rides after a while. I didn't particularly enjoy riding in their bumpy cars either haha. GO LEGIT!!!

please DO NOT CUT YOUR SPRINGS!! i'm not sure how much more i can tell you this, but DO NOT CUT YOUR SPRINGS!! you do not have a civic or integra or anything and even on those cars, i would never go the cutting route. TL's are bigger and heavier and if you cut, it will blow your shocks and mess everything up big time. my advice to you is this, if you're not going to do it right, don't do it at all. you'll have more headache in the end and you'll regret ever doing it.

bad idea man, cuttin um just makes ride quality suck, has no performance enhancing bonuses, and after about 10k miles your car will have been rocked so hard by the road shit will start fallin apart. just go rob a bank or steal from the govt for the funds

I would have to agree that cutting the springs is not a good idea, although if that's what you'd like to do, we can't stop you. Cutting the springs will obviously lower your car, but the thing with aftermarket springs is that they are also stiffer as well as shorter. If you're just cutting stock springs, you will most like mess something up in the long run. The springs would not be stiff enough to handle the bumps and you'd probably be hitting bump stops pretty often. That would probably make quite a few things give out after a while, the one that comes to mind first is motor mounts, and I'm sure you don't want to replace those. It's definitely your call though.

like everyone says."DONT DO IT" save up some bread and go for the spring/strut set up. Then maybe later on down the line you can upgrade to some coilovers.

well with 18s and 245 tires. i think you're gonna have a rubbing problem even if you just drop it a little bit.

Wait for a deal. I even found some Tein SS coiovers for 540 after a bit of searching. Lightly used, but still in great condition. If you can get the 18s, then you should be able to get a decent suspension set up after a bit of saving.

just go on ebay and get ravespeed springs they are like 80 bucks shipped and give the drop you want. A member on this forum has them and loves them.

Was at a shop looking at a fairly damaged TL. I asked them about it, and they had some parts that they were selling off. 2 sets of coilovers, tein SS and ground control, and a set of chrome 18in inspires. Got the tein's offa them, but couldn't grab the inspires. Was originally 500, but they wanted my stock springs and shocks, which i wanted to keep, so that cost me an extra 40.

They ended up doing an 03 conversion on it, but went back to stock for all the parts.
