Question about brakes
Question about brakes
I'm looking to change my rotors but every mechanic has told me I need to change my brake pads if I change my rotors. Is this true? I have about 80% left on my pads. Also anyone know where I can get a pair of brembo blank rotors for cheap? thanks
hey, they recommend that you change your pads at the same time you change your rotors because you do not want the junk from the stock pads to mess up the new rotors. I asked the same question a few weeks ago and got that response. The only place i found brembo blanks is TireRack.
You can put new pads on old rotors but dont go putting old pads on new rotors!!!
You'll get the same wear pattern as you had with the old rotors. If you look at your old rotors, you will see the gove, or wear, patterns are kinda wavy, like wavy-layz potato chips. Well, the old pads are contoured like that also.
So when you put the wavy pads on the new, flat surface, you are introducing the same wear pattern back into the new rotor, but worse, there may be areas where there may not be much contact and cooling and heat distribution may be affected.
I've had this happen twice (in different cars) with shops that refaced my rotors due to warping. They would slap them on with the old pads still in and less than 4k miles later, they are warped again. But if you do it right and put new pads with new or resurfaced rotors, they will work for you much better in the long run.
That guy wasnt blowing smoke, its a good practice.
