I really didn't hear any noise.........I just felt the gear slip from 2nd to 3rd. The rpm's would skip really high before changing gears without the car goin' faster. The gears would also shift really rough.

When My Tranny Went

When my Tranny went, there was no real warning. I was driving at normal city speed, and I heard a metalic ping, like a stone hitting the sheetmetal. I thought nothing of it, drove to my next appointment, and when I came out I saw a drip of oil coming off the frame. The oil was black so I thought it was engine oil. I called the dealer and asked to bring in my car that day. I drove to the dealership, and when they put the car on the hoist, the entire underside was covered with transmission oil. When they checked the stick, there was no oil left on the stick. They wanted to do the fix in stages, to fix the leak, first front axel seal, when that didn't correct the leak, a cv shaft was replaced, and finally they decided to replace the tranny. In all the while there was no slipping or any wierd sounds outside of that metallic ping, that I heard. Then dealing with Acura Customer relations was a real treat. They never had a handle as to when a replacement tranny was going to be available. There are so many people waiting for replacement transmissions, I guess the old story is true, "the sqeeky wheel gets the grease". Finally after waiting for over 6 weeks the dealership gave me an inside deal on a 2002.

Good Luck ! sorry I wasn't more help.

BDI, could u pls elaborate on this! I think my car (also a 99) might be doing this. You don't hear it, but u feel it. At around 2500rpms the engine would surge to 3000rpms then shift to the next gear. Is this what yours did? What happened that caused the dealer to replace the tranny?

Unhappy

the first sign hmm...
dont think there was a real sign,
just i was goin up on a hill and around 2k rpm on 4th gear around 30mph, and then it felt like it shifted into neutral, 2 secs after that the rpms climb up all the way towards 3.5k to 4k rpms. The needle bobbed up and down, i roll down the window and i hear a little cling ping ting ching dont know, stuff you hear when you drive over pebbles hitting the metal panel,
the sad thing is i was planning to take the car for a tranny oil change at approximately 20k miles, even though the manual say to change at 30,000 miles, and in the manual it even has the extreme drivers that should change engine oil earlier but not suggesting the tranny oil being changed,

sigh......

j38, so when the car felt as if it was in neutral the engine would just rev and the car wouldn't go anywhere?

If this is the case, I better drive my car abit more. I live only 15kms from work and so I don't put a lot of mileage on my car. It's only got 26,000 kms on it, that's only like 5,000miles. The Acura warranty is only for 3 years right?

Hey speed, check the math. Last time I checked, conversion Km to miles was x .61. Your 26000km would be over 15000 miles. Maybe you just left off the 1.
