hey,
i'm new here so sorry if this is a re-ppost.ran across an acura in my price range. I love the way the TL looks but after much research i have noticed that they have a huge problem with their transmissions. my question is after a certain point is the original tranny most likely going to be fine? they seem to break down before 100k or shortly thereafter. here is the car description. http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/cto/3726124096.html
checking it out in person in 8hrs or so.
any advice would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
jon

damn... 3 yrs ago I got my type s for 6.5k at about 144k miles. That seems like a deal, but the transmissions are a hit or miss. If it breaks get an odyssey tranny or accord v6 tranny and you will be good to go, so save about 1.5k in case the tranny goes.
As for the car.... it looks like it was taken care of properly, and those headlights are in great condition. 1 owner is always a great thing, that means they wanted the car to last, so they took care of it.
If you can test drive the car, and go WOT, if there is any RPM spike then the tranny is about to die. It is supposed to have a quick responce.
If you do get it, it is a lovely car. Once you fix all the problems and upgrade things here and there, you will enjoy it even more.

Hey JtheD, get the car's vin # and check with your local Acura dealer. They can tell you if the tranny was ever replaced by the factory recall. Other than that, ask the owners if they have any documentation on the repair and service records for the car. Meticulous owners will usually keep these receipts.
If ya really like the way the car appears and drives, make them an offer. If they don't want to negotiate, tell them that you would like to have the car professionally evaluated on a lift for any potential issues. Then go from there ! Good luck.....looks like a well kept car.

the person selling spelled VTEC right...that right there is a good sign ![Thumbs Up](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif)
last time i checked though, weren't the 03 models less prone to failure?? either way, unless you have the accord tranny in there i think it's inevitable either way

I bought my 03 TL-S off a Philippino lady for 7k cash up front and showed me all the papers and service records and what not.. But the problem was that one day when I removed my bumper to black out the headlights I noticed that the frame was welded -.- and it has a intake out of a 03 CL-S with junkyard numbers on it. So she goofed me. Checked the carfax and showed no history of any accidents..
