5w30 offers more protection
5w20 helps ford and honda meet the federal epa levels on there cars,ie. the thinner the oil the better mpg.not noticable to you or i but multiple it by millions and it keeps the bean counters happy.
can't address the synthetic stuff, dont use it yet. i can say ill never use fram filters again, after reading a report that was linked on this forum.

Mobile 1 comes in a grey bottle with some red/blue/black trim and castrol is packaged in green/red/white/black...

I don't like green so I got Mobile 1 synthetic. The guy at Napa with grease on his shirt saw me pull up and look at oil inquisitively and recommended 5w-30 for my car. Seems fine to me!

i would use a thicker oil in warmer climates or for hard driving situations (alot of idleing in traffic. ect...) use a little thinner oil in colder climates. as far as syn ? dont know dont use it. i have been extremly happy with castrol 5 & 10/30 oil (winter and summer)

hey redliner looking at where you're from id deff. go with 5w30 any brand oil. just remember
1. pick one brand and wieght and use it religously.
2. use a quality filter. after thinking long and hard ive decided to go with acura filter or k&n.contrary to what i thought forever the filter IS a very funtional piece of equipment, and a $hitty one(FRAM) could not give you good protection at start-up ie. valve train noise at start-up +++++

Theoretically, yes, apples to apples or dino vs. dino. You must also remember that syn is also supposedly slicker than dino. I used 5w30 M1 in my 2002 and it felt like it woke up compared to the dino stuff. Of course, I went with syn at 4200 miles or just after it was broken in. I used it until I sold the car last week at 20k. Using syn, my S got 22-24 in town and 30-33 on the highway, fully loaded. I also used a K&N oil filter.

I went with syn for the added protection. It costs more but I am anal about taking care of a car, any car. Of course, it seams the next owner will reap all the benefits.

That's my personal experience. There have been many threads over the last few years on the same topic.
