Problems with Legend Caliper Swap
I was installing Legend Calipers today and ran into an issue. I couldn't get the Legend caliper to clear the original TL bracket. From what I've read hear it seems to be an easy swap. Anyone else run into this problem?

thats the right parts- L goes on passenger side
They fit perfect on the TL brackets- you are using the original brackets from the car-
NOT the ones that came with the brackets right?
the new bracket- you strip the bolts and metal slider clips off of use them on the TL bracket
They legend brackets will not bolt onto the TL!

make sure to prefill the calipers with brake fluid- I used a small metal oil squirt can- it cuts down on possible o ring damage and air pockets during bleeding
Bleed order if LF- driver front side then clockwise LF RF RR LR

Take that big flat spring out of the center of the legend caliper- not needed on TL and sometimes has a cleance issue
If the pads are in place- clipped in- there is no way the caliper will not just slide right on (pad backs greased properly) and bolt into place! Are the caliper pistons still retracted in the caliper? Are the pads locked in place and lubed properly?

to clarify- use the cars existing TL caliper mounting brackets
Use the new small parts off the Legend bracket, and toss the bracket back into the box for return.
You cannot use the legend bracket-- it will not fit!!

I circled the area where the bracket is not clearing from a pic I found here. I am using my existing 99TL bracket with the Legend caliper. If you look at the picture the bracket is arched and the caliper isn't clearing. I did leave that spring in but Im not sure if it's going to help. I'll try to get some pics in the morning,

ohhhh its a 99
My car is an 01 so I know whats on it for certain, and that it works on later years of gen2.
The 99s had their own brake press on rotors- different than the rest of us-- as well
My bracket looks similar- but you mean the middle finger of the legend caliper touches the bracket edge--slightly or a lot?
And thats with the bleeder valve of the caliper facing the top where it belongs?
Will the legend bracket bolt onto your mounts? DO the holes line up ?
Maybe thats the trick!
If needed you can grind/file away a bit of the bracket edge- it doesnt need all of it~
May have to revise this mod to 2000+ models

Yeah, it's catching at the "middle finger". It looks like I need to file it down about 1/16" to "flatten" out that section. I had the bleeder valve facing up in the correct position.
I will get out a grinder tomorrow to see if it will clear and also line up.

Make sure- BEFORE you cut anything- IS the caliper actually going PAST its bolt holes?- try putting the bolts in- does it clear now- or is it hitting?

good to know firsthand from a99 owner- thank you!
I think its a matter of: the caliper will push farther on-- than where its mounting bolt holes are.
If you just ease the caliper back a mil- everything is right~
Lets hope the OP just needed a fresh start today and it goes together perfect.
Remember to put somne fresh brake fluid into the new caliper before installation- it really helps!!!

Update: Got the Legend Calipers on without a hitch. I thought they didn't fit at first because I was trying to fit the TL bracket with the Legend caliper when they were both off the rotor. However, once I mounted the bracket, the caliper lined up fine.
One new issue though. There are some scraping issues with the new pads and rotor. When driving there is a screeching sound coming from the front 2 rotors. My dad said this is normal for the first couple of days and should quite down. Has anyone experienced this?

Did you remove the big center clip from the calipers like I said to? Its probably hitting the outer edge of the rotor- the middle part not the face
I have seen those get bent in shipping and be worthless- they are not required on the TL,
my car has them with no issue, a local ziner runs without because they hit and scraped the fancy black paint off the rotors edge~
They should not make noise- but I dont know what pads and rotors you are on
If old rotors and new hi performance pads- you may need to clean to the rotors with sandpaper to remove old pad residue.
Or you may need to bed in the new pads- especially if hi performance
In dads day you would just drive it, now we have special instructions- some for specific pads and rotor combos- others work well for most brands
Thanks for finding another tip for the DIY- `do not test fit off the car and freak out`- just clean and paint everything and put it back together. The rust looks bad!

01tl4tl,
I forgot to take off that metal clip. And I just went down to my garage and saw what look like some wear marks on the outer edge of the rotor. This is leading me to believe that the stupid clip is scraping. Do you think I'll be fine if I leave the clip on till this weekend?? I don't have any tools at my place, and will have to wait till the weekend until I can get to my parent's place.
Oh btw, I am running new Centric Rotors and Akenbono ProACT pads.
Thanks again for all your help.

if its just the outer edge and not the surface the pad touches- then its fine until you can fix it, its just bare surface normally- you can repaint if desired
Make sure the slider clips- the new ones you took of the legend bracket- they get greased where the end tab of the pad slips in, and the backsides of the pads where the piston edges or the caliper fingers are going to touch- a bit of greade right there.
I wipe away the grease that extends past the fingers- so no extra grease laying there getting dirty
Do not grease the pistons!!- grease goes on the pad backing, not the caliper pistons- that attracts dirt- bad
Once thats done- then try this method of pad bedding- I helped write it and tested on my TL
