Powering off delay!

When I cut my car off the radio now continues to play for 10-15 sec. It shuts off automatically and I haven't had a problem with my battery yet. It did it a few months back as well, but it stopped. I had the same problem with my 94' Accord, but I totalled it before I solved the problem. Has anyone else experienced this? Or can anyone identify the problem?

my guess would be a relay that is sticking for an odd reason or a capacitor holding charge in the radio possibly. does anything else stay on other than the radio, like the windows? when the door is open at the same time. its gonna be a bit of a challenge to try and figure this one out without diving into it with a multimeter.

factory radio?

I seem to remember always having to manually turn off my radio when I turned off the car (when I first got the car). It somehow mysteriously went away. It's probably mentioned in the user manual somewhere though.

The delay is Only for the power windows and power is cut off when the door is opened.

off the top of my head, i cant think of anything that would only hold power for 10 15 seconds after the car is shut down. so i would not expect it to be a wiring issue from a previous owner. i still think its a relay or a cap. i personally have mine wire to stay on with the retained accessory for the windows. kinda like gm's my radio will stay on until i open a door or it times out with the windows. maybe you can try that to isolate the problem while also having a kinda cool feature as well

I dont think it is a problem. It was just being wired to a relay sourse like windows or sunroof.

It is my factory radio and it is not supposed to stay on once the key is turned to the off position. The radio plays after I open the door and after the doors are locked. I always wait a sec and then poof, it turns off! Definitely not normal and definitely a new issue. I've had the car since 05' and it just started this. Oh, and where do I go to find the tip to the muffler? One of mine mysteriously dissappeared.........

if it doesn't bother you that much i guess you can leave it until it stays on longer and longer.

i guess the easiest way to tell if its the radio or the switched source is to pull the radio fuse on the inside fuse panel. not the constant power under the hood, unless you have your radio code. if the radio stays on after you pull the fuse its most likely the radio, if it turns off id probably try and look into it a bit deeper just to find the source of the problem.

you could always connect another switched power source if it becomes a little annoying.

Did anyone ever figure out what caused the delayed power down? My '02 TL-P just started doing this maybe a week ago and it definitely did not before. I have an aftermarket head unit + front speakers, stock rear speakers + sub.

This can happen *if* you have some kind of power adapter connected to the car (such as a filtered power adapter plugged into the cigarette lighter outlet) that has a capacitor that needs to discharge. I started using one to power an amateur radio, and all of a sudden my radio would keep working for 5 seconds or so after shutting the car off. I thought whaaaaat, my car never did that before? Then I figured it out.

This will only happen if something is connected directly to the radio circuit, but not if you have something (like a large filtering capacitor and amp) connected directly to the battery. The reason is that the capacitor can back feed into the radio circuit and power it until the capacitor discharges.

SuperGreg! Dude! You are a genius! I recently picked up a QuickCharge 3.0 car charger and it must have a beefy cap or something because it's the culprit. Peace of mind? Check.
