Possible transmission issue? Thoughts?

I had my original transmission fail at around 44k miles and it just flat out had all the blinking lights on the highway and by the time I got off the highway once I came to a complete stop, I was able to get to like 5mphs or so and then it just started reving without moving any faster. Now being at 118k, I fear the second transmission may be gone but I could be paranoid and wanted some opinions.

I had changed my transmission fluid (using the new formula) about 4 months ago and maybe a month or so after that it started to notice the car shudder a little when I would be somewhere between 25mph to 40mphs when I am holding the gas at about 2000rpm usually when going up a hill (a couple of times going straight). It feels as if the car doesn't know what gear to go into meaning stay on the current or go into the next gear. If I push on the gas harder it continues to accelerate and the shuddering goes away. At first I thought this was the transmission slipping but from talking to a few more people and reading some more it doesn't seem to be "slipping" where it rev it and it the car doesn't accelerate. I added some extra fluid and it seems the issue didn't happen as often any more.

This kept going on for the past few months for about maybe 10 to 15% of the time and if it happens it only happens once or twice between when the car is started and shut off. A few days ago, the VSA, (!) and CEL came on and it showed the DTC 70 code. When I took it to Autozone, it read the P0740 code. From the searches here on Acurazine a lot of people say the transmission is toast but although my symptoms don't seem to exactly match?

Thoughts? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

According to the HELMs manual it says the "Detection Item" as "Lock-up control system".

Did the code show up again before it died?

how much fluid did you change? 3 qts? it will drain up to 3.4
have you ckd it with 15 minute freeway cruise? should be between the dots at that fluid temp,,in park - engine OFF

did you really go 75 kmiles without a fluid change since trans replaced?

The code remained until the tranny was toasted, even reseting the ECU didnt work.

Before it was in the middle closer to the lower dot and then when I added some more, it is now at the upper dot.

At around 30k miles I did the 3x3 drain and fill method and then I did only drain and fill about 20k later and then another drain and fill about 20k later. I did also test it as recommended about about 15 minute freeway cruise with the engine off parked on level ground.

Hopefully it doesn't come back and it is just the connectors as 01tl4tl suggested

Checked the DIY list again but don't think I saw it. I'll look through all the topics relating to the transmission to see if I find it embedded within one of the other threads.

The "shuddering" that I do feel doesn't feel as if it is a heat shield or anything like that. It feels as if the car shakes lightly a little. Even the wife in the passenger seat feels it but it does go away as soon as I push a little harder on the gas to raise the rpms by 500 or so.

mine has been doing that since 5k on the warranty replacement trans (post 05 model)
Now ~40kmiles on that trans and shudder is worse, is improved/lessened by more throttle pressure,,no slipping just shudder shift

Thinking about seafoam trans tune and all new fill of dw1

plus a trans expert buddy says he has a secret additive to help our trans overall,
still prying info out of that person!

test drive with trans tech at dealer said He thought it might be shift/pressure selenoids

Note on fluid level- BETWEEN the dots is spec= at 15 minutes freeway cruise

DO NOT add to bring to the upper dot
Thats overfilled,, since the indicated level rises with increased heat from driving,,
stop and go in town really heats it up too

Thanks 01tl4tl

Just last night the lights came back on and it was the same code, DTC code 70 at least, I assume the one from the reader will say P0740. I noticed it came on only because it was dark. I have to find the switches you mentioned and see if they look ok.

Did a drain and fill, 3.4qt out today and I put 3.2qt back and and it is just now between the two dots. The level looks good now and I'll see what happens. The old fluid was pretty dark.

The two times it did come on in the past 2 weeks was when I went through the city for an extended period of time with lots of stop and go just at the tail end of rush hour. I haven't driven through the city during rush hour for at least two years now. Could all the stop and go caused the fluid to rise even higher than spec so it could be the reason for the issue?

Less than a week after spending $40 to do the drain and fill, it won't go in reserve every so often until I shut the car off and wait 5 minutes or so. Good thing the Acura dealer was just 1/2 mile away. Hopefully Acura will good will the tranny work and will cover some of the cost.

I have the same shudder as OP. When going up hill at slight throttle usually does it. It kinda feels like being in a wrong gear on a standard shift.

I mostly drive my car in SS mode and that helps. I don't think I ever got codes because of it yet.
