Please help....

I know there are already other threads on this topic b/c I have read all of them, but I'm having trouble with chroming my shift plate. Everyone says it should be easy to get out, but I can't. I pull on the shift plate, and the whole black piece underneath it unsnaps with it, and I really don't want to take that whole thing out b/c it's always easier to take things apart than put them back together, so I'd rather just get the shift plate out. If anyone can offer any advice on this one I'd appreciate it.

You should be able to just pry it off from one side and it pops right off. Not sure why the whole thing is coming off.
