You'll need a special tool, someone will chime in on that here soon since I dunno what it's called.

I'd think you should disconnect the battery personally.. the HID system is high voltage.

I dont think a special tool is needed...but you are right about the battery. You need to diconnect it and let everything sit for a few minutes so any left over charge will disapate. you need to wear some kind of gloves when you install them so you dont get prints on the bulbs.

The tool is a Security Torx Bit...it's [t-20 torx security bit] it has a dimple in the middle. You can grab it a Home Depot...I replaced my bulbs a few months back and I had to remove the battery to have enough room to see and reach everything...

and Yes...do disconnect the battery...I went as far as removing it so i can have room to maneuver

They are not phillips that's correct, they are Luminarcs. They are not used.

ya the HID bulbs are damn expensive. I think its funny when people drive around with their lights on when they have HIDs (usually new cars). They think they are cool and everyone looks at them - too bad they probably have no idea that when they replace the bulbs, it will cost so much.

its good they do last longer than halogen lights though

Question

Ive always been confused about HID's. Answer this for me, Are the stock headlights on the 99TL HID's??? or are they Halogens since there just bright white and dont have that purpleish blueish color depending on the angle you see them?

I believe they are HID's in the 99. My 2000 headlights are just bright white like you described, and I know they are HID's. As far as the purplish/bluish lights on new cars, from what I have read it has to do with the projector assembly to have it look like that, but they are the same 4300 bulbs (ie. 3rd gen tl).

All TL's from 99 to today have HID standard. The diffuser lense in the 99-01s make the HID look different than the clear, jeweled lenses of the 02-03 or the projectors of the 04+.

Yes there is a security bit that was mentioned. Generally, you shouldn't mess with high voltage equipment - that's why that security is there.

A gas discharge bulb can be ran constantly. The life expectancy is about 3000 hours, or 165,000 miles of them being on constantly (at 55mph average). Flashing HID lights are what shortens lifespan. Our high mileage king, fttyms (Kris) has some 193,000 miles on his 2000 TL and the original HID bulbs and equipment.

when the HIDs start to go out, they will get more purple...and it will take about 100 hours for the new bulbs to burn in completely - so just keep them on. You wouldnt like 8000k bulbs, because you really start to lose light output from stock HID levels

Actually while it is true that HIDs will shift towards a bluer kelvin as they age, they will turn yellowish or even pinkish before they reach end-of-life. Your stock bulbs were probably in the prime of their 3000 hour life expectancy.

Well at your mileage that would be expected. It should be about time to consider replacements, I'm sure the output of the headlights is decreasing by now.
