Angry Paint Woes

I've had mine Silver Type-S since 3/24 and it's been woooonderful.... with one small exception.... the paint. I'm not happy about the paint.

I've got several small defects in the paint, which I was going to be willing to live with: there's a bump on one of the doors (it could be a grain of sand in the paint), and a couple of small runs that don't really bother me that much. But what really is starting to bug the heck out of me is the paint almost seems as soft as putty. I got a rock chip on the front air scoop and it just peeled back like an orange skin. I've got another one on the passenger side doorsill that's almost the same. Then today, argh!!, I nicked the back of the car taking my briefcase out of the trunk and it left two inch-long gouges in the paint right down to the bare metal...and, again, it's peeled like a flap of skin... it's not just a scratch, it's like the paint is not adhering to the body. It's making me crazy!! This doesn't strike me as the quality paint job that I'd expect on an Acura.

Anyone having this same problem?

Any ideas on what to do? I'm thinking about taking it to a pro paint shop first and get their opinion and some cost estimates. Then I'm going to go talk to the dealer about getting some of it fixed (maybe get the bump of sand, dirt, whatever removed and maybe have the paint runs looked at too), but if this becomes an ongoing issue, I'm going to be one very unhappy camper.

Yes, the Acura paint job is very fragile. I've accumulated my fair share of nicks and scrapes in my two months of ownership. It's sad, but true!

I guess the only thing you can do is to see if the dealer will repaint your scratched up panels. But the nicks and scrapes will likely continue, especially if you drive in areas with a large amount of road debris.

Debris Everywher

Denver should be called "The Land of Rocks and Crud Falling off Trucks"! I'd say it's more like "The Land of Idiot Drivers", but I think that's anywhere you go anymore.

I've already fractured a fog light from road debris.

But thanks for letting me know that the paint job is "tender". I'll certainly be more careful.... makes me doubly glad that I got the clear bra now!

How much did you pay for your clear bra? Did you get it professionally installed? What about warranties, etc?

Clear Bra

I can't find the paperwork right now.... but I got the clear bra when I got the car.... dealer installed option and I think it was about $200... I also got the window tinting done there for another $100+... let me tell you, a Silver TL Type-S with dark tinted windows looks amazing!

Both the clear bra and the window tint were well worth the price of admission.

Ooops...warranties

The tinting is warrantied for life. Wowzers!

The bra, I don't think is warrantied as much... I actually intend to replace the bra every 12 to 18 months just so the front stays looking really sharp.

If you have the clear bra carries a $1000 paint/headlight protection package.

I think the paint is actually very brittle an why it chips so easily, I thinking about getting the hood done with the clear bra even though I have a dark color. I have everything else done and it works great!

Do any of you guys have the Touch of Class paint protectant (Teflon coating). I'm wondering if this helps at all...

Touch of Class

Never heard of it. Is it a dealer option? All they tried to sell me was the bra and the window tinting (and the wing and the stupid sunroof wind deflector and... yada yada yada)... I guess I shoulda said, "all I got was the window tinting and the bra"

I used to get a Teflon wax and Butter wax from a local (Indianapolis) manufacturer that was really good. I don't know that I'd pay a whole lot for an extra Teflon coating that's probably going to wear off at the same rate as wax anyway.
