It took me about a month to get used to the shifter on my '00 TL. The TLS is the same, so I felt right at home.

For SS, just leave it alone and it will automatically reset to first gear when you come to a stop. You can also just pop it over to D5 and it will find the right gear for whatever speed you are at. I find myself going between D5 and SS a lot depending on traffic.

While I've driven a stick for the past 12 years there is nothing like a fully manual automatic. The best of both worlds and it doesn't wear you out in traffic. Of course it was a custom transmission and I doubt that there will be enough Acuras out there to get some aftermarket performance company to make one for us.

Hey, what if we tell everyone to buy Acuras?

Since we're not supposed to do links anymore, just do a search on "BMW World - 2001 BMW M3 SMG" and read about it.

I've never seen one so I can't say if I would prefer it over my old manual-auto, but it sounds cooool.

While I have to say that I've lugged myself through manuals on Jersey roads, (from 3 speeds to 6) plodding through the GSP/NJ Tpk/Routes 3/4//17/21/23/46/80/287/9W and the ever-popular 78, I'm always fascinated about the panache of manual transmissions on this forum. Doesn't anyone drive for hours between 3 and 12 miles an hour for (what seems to be) hours)?

I've gone through West New York, North Arlington, Paterson, Newark, New Brunswick, Trenton, Camden, etc. I appreciate the stories of 120+ MPH, but here, it's light to light (about 3 blocks total, if you're lucky). LOL

Unhappy Over complicated Shifter pattern

I don't about the rest of you, but the things that bugs me most on a day in and day out basis it the over engineered shifter pattern.

It would bother me so much if the SS option worked more like a manual. Imagine if you had to shift through every gear on a 5 or six speed to downshift to 1st or the lowest gear possible. That's what you have to do with the SS option. It falls short of what a racer really needs.

Unless I missed something in the manuel on how the SS works, ratcheting down through all the gears is not very efficient. By time you do several tenths are gone or more.

I want to have direct control over which gear I want when I want it. Maybe that's why I find myself manually shifting through the pattern than to use the SS feature.

Anyone find another way around this or how when using the SS option to shift from D5 to D1 without shifting through D4, D3 and D2 first?

Bottom-line is "Cool looks", but not very functional in my opinion.
