OnStar NAV?

I am almost ready to buy the TL S but I have a question about the OnStar Nav. As most of you know, it's $2K difference with the NAV. I don't think I will be using it much but I do like the integrated climate control in the NAV. As I understand, you get one year of OnStar service for a new vehicle. Does that mean the map and direction only work if you subscribe to the service after one year? Or is the OnStar service for additional features such as vehicle locator, emergency contact, etc?

I don't care much about the $2K more up front but I do have a problem with paying $400-$500 a year for something that I seldom use. If I do sound cheap, I am.. I am also practical too.

The OnStar and the Nav are not dependant on each other. Basically, if you do not have OnStar... the Navi will still work fine as the maps are off of a CD (DVD) from a unit in the trunk and a sensor.

The important thing to note is there are *no* monthly fees for the navigation system. The $2000 option buys the navigation unit and the DVD disc inside. You can use it as often or as little as you wish (I guarantee you will use it a *lot* more than you think--provided you live in/near or travel through areas that are fully mapped). Like Juniorbean said, OnStar is a separate entity from the navigation. Acura bundles them together and although OnStar probably uses the navigation's GPS hardware, they more or less operate independantly of each other. You can choose to pay the monthly OnStar fee after one year (various membership levels/amounts) or you can choose to leave it be and pay nothing else and not use OnStar, but still use the fully-functional navigation.

Thanks for the quick response. I will stick with my orginal plan and get one with NAV.

Regarding the NAV, I read in this forum that someone had added the ability to use the screen for other video input. Does anyone have the specs for the NAV lcd? For example, what type of resolution does the screen handle. I would be interested in connecting a computer to the screen.

BTW, most of the dealer in my area do no have any TL S (low mileage) in stock with NAV, I will have to special order one. I am thinking of the green one. Does anyone have picture of a green one?

I don't think there are any of the Noble Green TL's on here at all. Not that I can think of off hand anyway.

As for the Navi... there is a decoder that you can add to the screen. I'm not sure of the specs of the monitor... the dealer should have documentation regarding that.

edit - Here's a link with some info for ya.... http://www.acura-tl.com/forum/showth...t=Navi+Decoder

The Noble Green Pearl is the one I like to see picture of. I think there is one in the Acura brochure but it's at a bad angle. I thought about Silver or Black when I first got interested in the TL. As I am going to the different dealership, I see too many of the silver one. Since I have to order one, I figure I'll go for a color that is not as common.
